MLB.com: Eyre Era over as Wood returns to Cubs

Eyre, 36, went 2-0 with a 7.15 ERA in what has been an injury-riddled season. He made 19 appearances in between two stints to the disabled list. The emergence of other lefties in the bullpen, Neal Cotts and Sean Marshall, along with strong performances from new faces Chad Gaudin and Jeff Samardzija squeezed Eyre out.

“He’s a good young man,” Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. “We needed to get Woody on the roster, and we needed a spot. We couldn’t go to 13 pitchers. Hopefully, somebody picks [Eyre] up and he can help a team. He’s a good young man, and I wish him nothing but the best.”

If you are an overpaid, undertalented LOOGY, is it really that much to ask that you keep yourself in shape and shave more than once every five days? I understand there are always crappy guys in the back end of the bullpen; I've come to realize that I only hate the ones that can't bother to shave.

This was one of the last really bad Hendry moves. (The last was probably the Marquis signing.) Lately he's been committing big money to legitimate stars and useful players (Soriano, Zambrano, Ramirez, Lilly) while filling in holes with cheap talent (Johnson, Edmonds, Cotts) and youth (Theriot, Soto, Marmol). A more productive farm system has facilitated this, but I like the direction he's going, and the results speak for themselves.

Actually I'm pretty sure that one came after all the "good" signings you mentioned except the Z extension. I'm still not thrilled with the Soriano contract.

But Marquis? All he's done so far is give us 300 innings of league-average pitching. I'll grant you, I don't know how he does it and it could disappear at any moment ... and I ridiculed that signing plenty. But $7 M a year for 180-200 innings of league-average pitching -- I'll take it.

What is Hendry's best FA signing (not counting the retention of his own players)? Mark DeRosa is a good place to start.

Walt, I didn't mean to imply that there was a moment when the bad signings stopped and the good ones began, just that they are trending better. I don't mind the Soriano contract. The Cubs have the money, and he was a significant upgrade. you're right that Marquis is not killing us (regardless of today's performance), but I think they could have gotten those league-average innings much cheaper.

Oh, I have no substantial problem with the Soriano contract for 2007-2009, it's the 2010-2110 part that concerns me. :-)

DeRosa, another one I sniffed my nose at, has worked out great. Lilly, one I liked, has worked out well. Howry, one I went "I hate paying middle relievers big money but if you're gonna pay one, he's a good choice" on, gave us 2 studly years and hopefully will produce over the last 2+ months this season. And, I suppose Edmonds is technically an FA deal, so was Leiber, but let's not count those.

You could count the Choi/Lee trade with the nearly immediate (and quite cheap) extension of Lee as an FA-type deal and that was an awesome one (and I was all in favor of it).

Off topic, but did anyone else see that former blue chip SS prospect Luis Montanez finally got to the big leagues with the Orioles--and hit a home run in his first major league at bat? He'd apparently been destroying AA pitching this year (in his fourth tour of that level).
