MLB.com: Fuld to sit in on Sunday’s game broadcast

Outfielder Sam Fuld will be joining Rays broadcasters Dewayne Staats and Brian Anderson in the booth for the finale of Tampa Bay’s Interleague series with Atlanta. Fuld will primarily provide sabermetric analysis throughout the game.

...

“I think that’s the one part of the game that [people] can probably make some more advancements on,” Fuld said about being able to quantify defensive ability.

It's interesting to hear the announcers talk about the subject, mostly because they admit 1) there's a place for it, and 2) they don't understand enough about it.

Is Fuld hurt for a while or is he out of the game already?

He's hurt.

BTW, Fuld is about a smart a guy as you'll ever see in a baseball uniform. I know his family pretty well, extraordinary family. Fuld is a graduate of a prestigious prep school, Phillips Exeter Academy in NH; went to Stanford, did very well academically; his dad is the Dean of Liberal Arts at UNH, his mom is a well-respected, retiring State Senator. Sam Fuld is going to make more money after his playing career than he will during it...

Brian Anderson's a really bright guy. He seems like the sort of person who'd be interested in saber stats and defensive metrics.

He's not all that polished as a broadcaster - or wasn't when he was working in Cleveland - but I've always found him to be extremely insightful.

He's also a good self-promoter by touting those defensive statistics. No need to print those glossy free-agent brochures when you can take to the airwaves!
