Baseball Primer Newsblog— The Best News Links from the Baseball Newsstand
Thursday, June 26, 2008
On Thursday afternoon at Dolphin Stadium, [Matt] Garza showed everyone what he’s capable of accomplishing, as the 24-year-old right-hander flirted with a no-hitter—and ultimately gave up just one hit—in a 6-1 Rays win over the Marlins that completed a three-game sweep over their Interleague rivals.
...
Hanley Ramirez finally broke Garza’s spell when he led off the bottom of the seventh with his 17th home run of the season, a towering shot over the left-field scoreboard… Ramirez’s hit proved to be the only blemish on Garza’s complete-game masterpiece, which saw him strike out 10 of the 28 batters he faced.
...
Only three weeks ago, replays of a spat in Texas between Garza and catcher Dioner Navarro played throughout the never-ending TV news cycle. Since then, Garza has worked with a specialist to curb his emotions—and the results speak for themselves.
“I’ve made huge strides,” Garza said. “Mentally, I think I would have lost it giving up that slider to Hanley… I regrouped. He hit a good pitch. It was outside of the zone and he went out there and got it.”

1. pthomas Posted: June 27, 2008 at 12:06 AM (#2834006)I used that phrase the other day and received blank expressions all around.
That's hilarious.
Of course I could never flirt with anything so that rules me out straight away.
What is it if you flirt and get told to \"#### off" before you get a sentence in, in baseball terms??
A Barry Zito start off sorts??
Pulling a Larry Yount?
A Ponson? A Lima?
"Today Matt Garza put his hand on a no-hitter's snatch" works for me.
A Ed Wade?
