MLB.com: [Jose] Guillen exchanges words with fan

Royals right fielder Jose Guillen was in the middle of a brief exchange with a fan after the fourth inning of Tuesday night’s game against the Rangers. The fan, sitting behind first base, apparently got on Guillen after he hit a liner off the left-field wall and stopped with a single in the second inning and again after he flied out in the fourth.

“I understand who I am and the money that I’m making. I understand that I’m hitting .250 and the fans are expecting a lot more than they’re seeing,” Guillen said. “But sometimes they don’t know what I’m going through and all that stuff. Just like when I got that hit to left field, I got there and the guy started jumping on me and saying all kind of stuff like ‘Why didn’t you make it to second?’ I hit the ball hard, the guy made a nice play and I had no chance to make it.”

Teammates interceded during the exchange and the incident was over quickly.

things you don't want to say to Jose Guillen

a) insults to his family
b) telling him that a pinch-runner will replace him

Hey Jose! Your wife's going to replace you with a pinch-runner!

Complete ass!

Seriously - the worst part about José Guillen is that he is driving up the market for decent, not great, corner outfielders. As an Angel fan, I lament what Juan Rivera could make on the open market if this asshat is making $12 million per year.

Just MLB players being MLB players.

So Scioscia's decision to take him out for a pinch runner WAS correct...

Since Guillen keeps his on base percentage low, he'll cut down on the opportunities to be heckled. Brilliant!

This guy should be ashamed. There's just no call for talk like that.

"[Jose] Guillen exchanges words with fan"

I know Guillen's no rocket scientist, but is it really news that he's able to talk? Talk about the soft bigotry of low expectations...

They're professional athletes; they’re used to this sort of thing. It rolls right off their backs.

(Guillen sheds a single, tiny tear)

Nicely done, Dayton. Jose Guillen and the Kansas City Royals' fanbase, TV broadcast team, and management appear to be getting along swimmingly.

Don't worry, Guillen will soon be on the move. Some teams will lose a corner outfielder this off-season and inquire about him. I think he breaks Mike Morgan's record before he retires.

One of my favorite spectator experiences was getting a "Darryl" chant going for Daryle Ward at a Calgary Cannons game.

MLB.com: Guillen's yelling match with fan irks GM
Royals general manager Dayton Moore was not pleased about an incident in which right fielder Jose Guillen had a shouting match with a fan.

"It's an unfortunate incident, and we continue to work with Jose about staying focused on the field," Moore said.
...
"It doesn't matter what a fan says -- you've got to respond in a way that's professional and the best response is no response, most of the time," Moore said.
...
Manager Trey Hillman missed the whole thing.

"I was actually in the toilet so I didn't see it," he said. "Managers do have to use the restroom so I picked a bad time. I found out about it a half-inning later and we talked about it briefly and there's no sense commenting on it."
Classic.
