mlb.com: LA uses same NLDS rotation for NLCS

Torre said the other candidates to start Game 4 are 20-year-old Clayton Kershaw and 42-year-old Greg Maddux, the latter seeming the least likely because Torre was so pleased with his versatility and resiliency coming out of the bullpen in Game 1 in Chicago.

“Greg gives us a great deal of variety because he can start, he can warm up quickly in the bullpen and he wills himself to do whatever we want him to do,” said Torre.

Torre’s preference is to hold Kershaw back for long relief.

“He gives us, God forbid, a long guy,” said Torre. “He or Maddux, but I prefer Maddux as an option later on. [James] McDonald would be another option.”

For his next trick, Maddux will saw Bunny Girl Joe Torre in half.

I'm excited for this series. I havent watched much NL ball this year and saw hardly any of the 2 LDS's.

I wonder how Maddux would do in a full time relief role. His arsenal is not at all that of a typical closer, but I bet even today, he could be lights out in that role.

Here's hoping Maddux gets his second ring this year!

Torre was quoted as saying that he likes Maddux in relief because "He will always throw strikes."

Comments like this always amuse me. I like starters who throw strikes, too. I suppose relievers sometimes enter games in situations where walks are absolutely unacceptable, but is control for a reliever any more important than control for a starter?

The problem with Maddux as a reliever is that throughout his career he has pitched significantly worse in his first inning than any other. Relievers have a much higher percentage of their innings as first innings.
