MLB.com: Padres give Hayhurst a shot vs. Giants

In the eyes of Padres general manager Kevin Towers, pitcher Dirk Hayhurst, who will make his Major League debut Saturday, has gone from non-prospect to, at the very least, a suspect.

The 27-year-old Hayhurst will officially be added to the Padres’ roster before Saturday’s game against the Giants at AT&T Park. He was 2-3 with a 2.75 ERA in 46 games for the Triple-A Portland Beavers, with all but two outings coming in relief.
...
“We’re trying to reward a guy who came through our system and has turned himself into a suspect at least,” Towers said Friday. “For a while, Dirk was a guy who we thought only had organizational value. But he’s continued to impress. He has three Major League pitches, throws strikes.”

Hayhurst, who was selected in the eighth round of the 2003 Draft and had authored a “non-prospect diary” for Baseball America, was a combined 4-2 with a 3.51 ERA in 2007 between three different stops.

Isn't this the guy who wrote the journals for Baseball America and who posted on here in the thread on them? Cool to see him getting a shot in the majors.

Yes. Teams often reward their good organizational guys on the 40 man roster at AAA and are close to being 6 year guys with a short callup when there's a looming roster crunch, and they're often designated for assignment to make room for someone coming off the DL a few days later. Given where the Padres are in the standings, and that rosters expand soon, Hayhurst is probably safe, and has a chance to make an impression, for the remainder of the year.

Will Hayhurst be the person to post on BTF to play in the big leagues?

Glad to see him get a shot. Hopefully he can make the most of it.

I'm just going to assume that this happened because I mentioned it was a possibility in a thread a couple of days ago and people who are much smarter than I am decided to post messages on DePo's blog urging him to urge others to call up Hayhurst. This is the closest I will get to the majors.

Unless...

Obviously Hayhurst and DePodesta will be liveblogging it, Hayhurst when the Padres are batting and DePodesta when Hayhurst is pitching.

I'm more interested in Hayhurst's postgame blog entry regarding what it was like showering with Brian Giles.

4IP, 3R, 5H, 2BB, 2K.

Can't see this game anywhere, but from reading the PBP one can get the sense that Dirk may have been jittery to start things out. He walked Roberts to lead off, then Roberts stole second and went to third on an Ochoa bunt single fielded by Hayhurst. The inning would result in two runs against.

The Giants got their third run in the fourth inning when Barry F. Zito hit a two out single to drive in Pablo Sandoval.

Good Luck Dirk!
