MLB.com: Redman + Dodgers = 10-run inning

The Rockies gave Mark Redman a two-run lead going into the bottom of the first inning Saturday. But Redman endured one of the worst innings imaginable, giving up 10 runs to the Dodgers.

Redman gave up six hits, the last a grand slam to Matt Kemp, the 12th of 13 batters he faced in the 45-pitch frame. He also walked three, including Andruw Jones with the bases loaded. Blake DeWitt added a two-run single. Dodgers pitcher Brad Penny, who had given up a two-run homer to Garrett Atkins in the top of the first, singled in a run and Rafael Furcal added an RBI double.

Redman also threw a wild pitch and hit Juan Pierre just before Kemp’s slam.

Redman allowed the most runs ever in one inning for the Rockies. It’s also the 15th time a Rockies pitcher has given up 10 or more runs in a game.

Kemp's slam was off a pitch clocked at 69 mph.
Most big-league pitchers couldn't throw that slow if they tried.

Just checked the box score to see what the next guy did and... the next guy didn't pitch until the 7th inning.

Yup, 10 runs given up, all earned at that, in the first inning and he still threw 6 innings with just 106 pitches needed. Wow. Never thought I'd see a manager let a guy give up that much to start a game then let him continue, let alone seeing him go 5 shutout innings after the nightmare. How weird.

Carlos Zambrano has started throwing an occasional slow curve to LHB that's in the mid-60s. I think it might just be a goof, since he only threw it in his first couple of starts this year. He might just have shelved it now that his fastball is back to topping out in the 93-96 range instead of 88-91 as it was earlier in the season.

The Rockies emptied their bullpen last night, when they went 13 innings and their starter lasted only two and two-thirds.

Down 10-2 after one inning to Brad Penny, it's a defensible decision. Ain't no way they were going to win that game.

Orlando Hernandez and Pedro throw a lot of curveballs at that speed. I think Oswalt does as well.

The weird thing about the box score is that only one Dodger batter had more than one hit--and that was the starting pitcher, Brad Penny. Usually when a team scores that many runs, at least one player has had a memorable night at the plate (Kemp had 5 RBI--grand slam plus a SF).

The Dodgers scored their 11 runs on only 10 hits, 5 walks, and 1 HBP (there were no errors, one GIDP). That's pretty damn efficient. I have to wonder if that's the fewest LOB (4) when scoring 10 or more runs in a game.

The home plate ump also took one in the neck or jaw and left the game (ESPN reported it as a blow to the jaw). Looks like Martin was crossed up and the ball sailed clean through to the ump.

Another interesting note: Andy Hawkins gave up 10 runs in 2.1 IP--all unearned.

Oswalt threw a curveball to Pujols' in yesterday's game which registered at 59 mph, according to Fox's radar numbers. Jim Deshais laughed that Oswalt must have set a record.

Mike Mussina has some pitches that register in the 60s. Of course, his fastball is only coming in around 84.

Sadly, BB-Ref's Play Index doesn't give LOB as a searchable category.
