MLB.com: Reds get Owings to complete Dunn deal

Rumored for weeks to be Cincinnati-bound, [Micah] Owings on Friday officially became the third player to complete the trade that sent left fielder Adam Dunn from the Reds to the Diamondbacks.

“It’s been a little bit in limbo,” Owings said while wearing his new Reds pullover over his new No. 56 jersey.

Since clearing waivers was required on all post-July 31 trades, the third name was kept under wraps. Word leaked that it would be Owings, but he had an arm injury that, by rule, prohibited him from being placed on waivers until he was healthy… After was deemed healthy by the doctors, he went through waivers and cleared without being claimed by another club.

Aaaand I totally missed whatever happened to cause Eckstein to end up with the D-Baxx. Jays just flat-out cut him, I guess?

He was traded for a real ballplayer who pitches professionally by the name of Chad Beck.

Wilkin Castillo, a catcher in the minors and one of the players acquired for Dunn, played at 2b for the Reds tonight.

Wait, what? Owings cleared waivers? I know he's had a tough year, but there was no interest below the Reds in the standings in a guy who threw 150 innings of a 109 ERA+ last year as a 24 year old rookie? That doesn't make sense to me.

I totally agree with you. Even if he does flame out as a pitcher, the Rick Ankiel route seems like a legitimate option with Owings, as well.

I guess it's just San Diego, Atlanta, Washington and Pittsburgh that would have had to have passed on him, since the Reds are pretty close to the bottom in the NL. It's less surprising in that light, and maybe those teams don't like Owings quite enough to burn up goodwill with the Reds and Diamondbacks by blocking the move. Also, they'd have to drop someone else if their 40-man rosters are full.

We're still at the stage where he could just be pulled back if one of the low teams claimed him, so there's no real point in any of them being a dick and making the Reds wait until the end of the season.

That's not being a dick. This isn't claiming a guy you dont' really want to block. This is a valuable commodity being offered to you.

Yes, but he's not really being offered to you in anything other than a procedural sense. Arizona and Cincy have already made an agreement to send him to the Reds. If you claim him, they're obligated by the terms of that agreement to pull him back, rather than try to cut a separate deal with you.

Ergo, the only point in claiming him would be to be a dick, and keep the Reds from getting their player until the season's over.

I had no faith in Owings developing as a Diamondback, but I don't think he's a lost cause elsewhere. Owings is an interesting project.
