MLB.com: Rox outslug Marlins in walk-off win

Humidor on vacation for the holiday?

The Rockies scored in all but one inning and came back from a nine-run deficit to defeat the Marlins, 18-17, in front of 48,691 at Coors Field on Independence Day… The last time a team came back to win from nine down was Aug. 23, 2006, when Cleveland rallied for a 15-13 victory at Kansas City, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
...
At 13-4, the game had all the makings of a blowout, but the Rockies’ offense wouldn’t have it, scoring eight straight runs to cut the lead to one. Ryan Spilborghs hit a solo home run in the fourth, and Holliday added one in the fifth. Three batters later, Iannetta hit a three-run home run onto the concourse beyond the left-field seats. Spilborghs hit his second solo homer of the night in the sixth for his third career multi-home run game, and Atkins hit a two-run shot later in the inning to bring the game to 13-12.

The Rockies’ relievers couldn’t keep it that way. Jason Grilli and Manuel Corpas combined to give up four runs in the seventh to extend the Marlins’ lead to five.

But on this night, the Rockies refused to die.

It wasn't just long balls, either. The Rockies hit six, but the Marlins hit only two on their way to 17 runs. It was just one of those nights when everything was falling in, everything was finding a hole. The two teams combined for 43 hits.

Also, they had played 11 innings the night before and burned through both bullpens pretty well, which is probably why Marlins starter Scott Olson was allowed to go five innings despite allowing nine runs, and at least one in each inning he pitched.

Sure looked like a lot of fun. I was at the game last night, when the Rockies got two in the bottom of the eleventh to win 6-5, and thought that might be the most enjoyable game of the year. That didn't last long.

One other thing: Troy Tulowitzki has now played in 13 games since coming off the DL, and he has hit five doubles and two homers in that span... and two singles. His BABIP is .179. So even though his numbers may not look like it, he's hitting the ball well, and I expect his batting average to start reflecting that pretty soon.

The funny thing is that Olsen was actually in line for the victory until the 9th inning. It's hard to give up 9 runs and get a win! (Though I seem to remember it happening this year...)

Funny you mention that...

I sent a text to a mate telling him that Johan had had another unlucky loss when he replied that I should check Olsen who is line for a joke of a win...

That was in the 7th inning I think - Hollidays Grand Slam was huge.

18-17? Has the Canadian Football League season started already?

I guess they forgot which balls were in the humidor.

Tracy Ringolsby's prediction is finally coming true: the Rockies finally hit!

"starter Scott Olson was allowed to go five innings despite allowing nine runs, and at least one in each inning he pitched.'

Actually I think they let him hit for himself in the top of the 6th and then took him out to start the bottom of the inning. Another interseting decision. Only two Fla. pitchers; Pinto and Waechter did any thing right, retiring all four batters in the 7th and 8th. They brought in Gregg to pitch the ninth. He is the CLOSER after all.

Olsen has gotten screwed out of wins during numerous good outings this year, so he'd have nothing to apologize for if he had gotten this one....

I'm really glad to see Waechter reviving himself. He was always a good pitcher with nice stuff when he was healthy but he looked like toast just a year or two ago. Moving to the pen suits him well.

Actually the CFL started last week

The Rough Riders new punter is working out fairly well, and boy did they need him. Only scored two rouges all of last year!
