MLB.com: Sizemore joins 30-30 club with homer

With the shot to left-center field off Tigers right-hander Armando Galarraga, [Grady] Sizemore officially put together the 14th 30-30 (30 home runs and 30 stolen bases) season in the history of the American League.

The 14 30-30 seasons in AL history were accomplished by a total of 10 different players. The last to do it was Alfonso Soriano for the Rangers in 2005.

Sizemore, who hit another solo shot in the third to reach 31 home runs and who came into the game with 34 stolen bases, is the second Indians player to reach the milestone. Joe Carter became the first in 1987.

Best player in the AL.

Well, OK, the Expos gave up Sizemore for ten weeks of Bartolo Colon, but at least that Lee kid never turned out to be any good.

The funniest thing about that trade is, I distinctly remember the headlines reading "Expos acquire Colon for Stevens, 3 minor leaguers"

Best player in the AL.

Sizemore has a 129 OPS+ in the last three seasons, A-Rod is at 161. A-Rod is 104-20 SB-CS, Sizemore is 89-19, so he gains nothing there. And he's only one spot ahead on the defensive spectrum. So basically Sizemore would have to be a really, really awesome CF and A-Rod would have to suck at third.

Sizemore is one of the best but I think A-Rod is clearly better. I'm not sure whether I'd rather have Sizemore or Mauer (133 OBP-heavy OPS+ in the last three seasons, but some obvious durability concerns).

Ted Sizemore stopped playing before I started following baseball, but my first thought was "Ted Sizemore is still playing?" I think it breaks down to 45% drunk, 40% stupid, 15% old.

My percentage of drunk and stupid is higher because when I added up those numbers, I got 105.

Well, Sizemore was better in 06 and he's better this year, but A-rod was WAY better last year. I think it's pretty close.

I've got Sizemore at 17.5 WAR (6.2, 5.8, 5.4) and Rodriguez at 17.4 (4.1, 8.6, 4.6) through 8/24. Position is +1.2 to Sizemore, playing time/lineup position is +.8, and fielding relative to position is +3.3, making up Rodriguez's 5.1-win advantage on offense.

By measuring against replacement, haven't you already corrected for playing time differences? That's the main point of measuring against replacement rather than average.

The playing time advantage [stems from] the replacement adjustment.

A few more seasons like this one, and we might have enough justification to mention Grady in the same sentence as Jacoby. Like Pedroia is mentioned in the same sentence as David Wright...

Carter was the Indian when I was a kid. In retrospect, he wasn't as good a player as Butler or Franco, but at the time he was pretty universally (at least in the Cleveland area) regarded as the franchise player for several years.

Of course, this was before most people really grasped the significance of OBP.
   20. Bob Dernier Cri Posted: August 26, 2008 at 01:43 PM (#2916275)
To be fair, being the franchise player for the 1980s Cleveland Indians wasn't the tallest of orders :)

Fair enough. He did lead the league in RBI once as an Indian.

And he made one of the most infamous SI covers of the decade, if not all time.

1987 Cleveland Indians: Best 100 Loss Team Ever? Seriously, has any team which finished so poorly been touted so highly before the season?

Seriously, has any team which finished so poorly been touted so highly before the season?

Not likely. (Hell, how COULD a team that highly touted finish much worse? They were picked by at least one major publication as the AL's best team, and ended up with the worst record in baseball.)

1987 Cleveland Indians: Best 100 Loss Team Ever?

Maybe. They actually had a pretty good lineup. Their pitching staff might've been competitive at Williamsport.
   25. Tim Stauffer, Trot Nixon's Coming (Dan Lee) Posted: August 26, 2008 at 04:18 PM (#2916442)
The bullpen was awful apart from Doug Jones, but they had some definite talent in the rotation. Candiotti, Swindell, pre-injury John Farrell. Ken Schrom was no great shakes, but he was coming off an (inexplicable in many ways) All-Star season in '86. Phil Niekro was coming off a passable '86 too.

Swindell and Farrell were too young, Niekro and Steve Carlton were too old, and Ken Schrom wasn't really any good to begin with. All that left was Candiotti.

A-Rod has 55 SB, 10 CS. Not sure where you got 104-20 from.

Probably because you had a 40/40 year in the late 80s

Geez, I have no memory of Ken Schrom either. My only excuse is that I was really pretty much a National League fan during his entire career. 900 major-league innings with a 51-51 record, I bet a lot of guys wish they had that career.

What made that cover infamous? The assertion that Cory Snyder was a slugger?

Fat, drunk and ignorant of Ken Schrom is no way to go through life.

What made that cover infamous? The assertion that Cory Snyder was a slugger?

The assertion that the soon-to-be-61-and-101 Indians were the best team in baseball.

From 1981-1986, every AL East team won the division once, except the Indians. 1987 was their turn.

The five-team AL Central has been in existence since 1994, but the division has been won by only three teams:

Cleveland: 7 times

Minnesota: 4 times

Chicago: 3 times

Detroit hasn't finished in first place since 1987; KC, since 1985. I assume that a similar phenomenon exists in the AL East.
