1. meatwad Posted: August 18, 2007 at 02:37 AM (#2490275)On the other hand, what a freaking difficult record to break. He's already thrown three shutouts in a row, and he still needs to throw two more? Never going to happen.
How's it hanging, Mr. Colletti?
Ummm . . . could've said the same thing when Orel was chasing Drysdale.
He'll face the Brewers next Wednesday, who are falling apart and could be shut out. If it's still alive, it's then the Padres, who are not exactly an offensive machine.
The odds ain't good, sure. But never???
He's filthy right now. Next up: Brewers @ Chase Field, facing Soup4Soul
For the first time in his career he really looks to be able to command all of his pitches for strikes at any time in the game. He'll throw maybe 3-4 curveballs a game and they'll still be perfectly located and they'll get him a big strike out when he needs them - like in tonight's game when he uncorked his first one in the fourth to lock up Chipper with one out and a runner on second (the only real trouble he was in all night). It was the fourth inning and his first curveball of the night and it was still perfectly located.
More than anything, the reason he has a legitimate shot at this streak is that he's got an excellent defense behind him and he doesn't give up the long ball. He's now given up nine home runs in 184.2 innings which is just unreal for somebody playing his games at Chase.
Answers can be found here.
Hank Aaron
Dale Murphy
Eddie Mathews
Phil Niekro
Warren Spahn
Skip Caray
Pete Van Wieren
Del Crandall
Ernie Johnson
Kid Nichols
And a bunch of executives. Pick some/all of the following: John Schuerholz, Stan Kasten, Bill Bartholomay, Ted Turner, Roy Clark, Bill Lucas.
I definitely missed some of the old-time players.
Murphy for sure. Bob Horner? Biff Pocoroba?
I'm assuming Atlanta and maybe a touch of Milwaukee here:
Spahn
Mathews
Aaron
Horner
Niekro
Murphy
Garr
Millan
Carty
McGriff (longshot . . . .)
Pendleton
Camp
What the hell.
Tony Cloninger maybe?
Warren Spahn
Eddie Mathews
Joe Adcock
Hank Aaron
Lew Burdette
Greg Maddux
Tom Glavine
Kid Nichols
Wally Berger
Phil Niekro
Fred McGriff
Ross Barnes?
No wait, that's the Braves' Hall of Merit.
I think that's a bit deceptive. I think there's another one who is in primarily for his off-field contribution, although he also played for the Braves. So I'd be looking for only 11 really great players, rather than 12 . . . . .
Tom Glavine
Nope. All the players are retired. You've got 7 of the 11, Dag. I had 6.
Let's just say that they favored players who spent all or nearly all their careers with the Braves over perhaps more qualified players who spent over a third of their careers with someone else.
That's . . . interesting. I hadn't even heard of one of them.
But it did inspire this post over at b-ref's Stat of the Day blog. Something you can look up in that post: who are the only 7 men to get 1,000 hits for the Atlanta Braves? How about the only 13 pitchers to start 100 games for them?
Then answers aren't in the SotD post itself, but I link to the answers (which, um, are ordered 'em by G and IP rather than what I'm quizzing you on. Ah well. You can look up the answers really easily if you want, too though.
See # 24. Ernie was a long-times Braves' announcer. He's in for the same reason Skip Caray and Pete Van Wieren are in -- not because he was a pitcher for the Boston and Milwaukee Braves.
I have a funny feeling -- unfortunately -- that if the Mets win the East, we just might be destined to face Mr. Webb a few times in the post-season. Not a pleasant thought. This streak brings back obvious memories of 1988 . . . and we know how THAT turned out for the Mets. Blech.
I know there's the scoreless streak but you could also think back to 1999 when we were going to have to face the seemingly unbeatable Randy Johnson twice in a 5 game series. Look how that turned out. Or you can remember '86 with Mike Scott. Look how that turned out.
:(
Fn Todd Pratt.
To see highlights of Webb's game, you can go to this link on mlb.com. Webb threw some nasty nasty stuff tonight.
Also, check out Reynolds's 2 run homer. The guy's got power. Recently he damaged the jumbotron at Chase Field during batting practice; the baseball he hit landed a little below the tile that Richie Sexson broke a few years back--and Richie's homer was measured at 502 feet. New hitting coach Schu has been working with Reynolds to control his swing a bit better and wait on the ball longer, and Reynolds is hot again. And the Dbacks need that.
Exactly. This isn't a Mets thread, for crying out loud
I know it's all going to come down to the intra-divisional games of the last month of the season, but it's still better to go into them with the upper hand.
Brandon Webb against this Mets' team scares me a LOT more than the Big Ugly has ever worried me. Mike Scott in 1986 . . . well, now that's a different story. That was big-time domination.
But if Webb happens to break Hershier's streak, and the Mets and Diamondbacks play in October, I'm telling you, I'm going to have flashbacks to that Scioscia HR in the 9th, and Hershiser coming in to save the game in the 12th. I was there. Still gives me chills.
It's a shame too, because he may not get another chance. After all, we know that Diamondback pitchers are over a thousand times more likely to throw a no-hitter at Turner Field than they are anywhere else.
6 vs. Col, 7 vs. SD, 6 vs. LA, and 3 vs. SFO who may be out of it but usually play D backs tough.
Early in the game McCann hit a foul deep down the left field line.....I commented on it at the DBBP game thread, saying it reminded me of a deep foul in a game in Atlanta in 2004...nobody else got the reference.
I really thought he might do it too tonight....definitely had that feeling.
Can we trade them with teams from the NL east?
What's your record against teams from the East, Levski? Tell us.
(And feel free, by the way, to improve it by two games the next two days. Please?)
I had that same thought. It helps that last weekend we were doing some cleaning and I found my copy of the promotional dvd they gave out at BOB of the perfect game. I've been having that on as background t.v. for the last few days now.
The other effect finding that dvd had on me, it finally made me appreciate the uniform switch. Sure, it may look like an intra-squad game whenever we play and Astros and Nationals, but at least we won't have to endure looking at those abominations again a few years from now when we pop in our 2007 World Series dvd.
See # 24. Ernie was a long-times Braves' announcer. He's in for the same reason Skip Caray and Pete Van Wieren are in -- not because he was a pitcher for the Boston and Milwaukee Braves.
Oh, I thought in #24 you were referring to Johnny Sain being in as being history's greatest pitching coach instead of as a player.
As for the actual topic of this thread, it's a very exciting streak to be in the middle of.
Wow -- it's the anti-Vaux! A D-backs' fan talkin' some smack. Love it.
What's your record against teams from the East, Levski? Tell us.
I can't tell if Sam is being facetious. Either way, it's 23-8.
Sorry if I stole your thunder Lev.
Actually, I was hoping to have it broken down by team, so as to induce Levski to admit the Mets hold a 4-3 edge on Arizona this year. Which means they have really smashed the rest of the East to bits. For which you have my great, great, thanks.
That's what you were getting at? Those games feel like ages ago.
On the plus side, we've won three out of our last four games so things are definitely trending in our favor.
My friend, if the Mets get to play the Snakes again, I will be more than happy to settle for a 4-3 split in our favor. You can win whichever three you want . . . as long as we win the last one. ;-)
I need to start pestering my sister now and to see if any of her business contacts can get good Mets tickets. Currently she just gets lots of Yankee box seats from her boss.
That would totally be worth taking a week off of school for (Chinese classes be damned!).
I LOVED the movie Black Hawk Down.
