MLB: Ausmus shocked by shark attack

On Thursday morning, Chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, Humberto Robinson from Cleveland. Baseball player. Boatswain’s mate. I thought he was asleep. I reached over to wake him up. Bobbed up, down in the water just like a kinda top…

Brad Ausmus is an avid surfer during the offseasons in his hometown of San Diego, and he was particularly jarred by the news that a 66-year-old man was killed by what authorities believe was a great white shark early Friday morning.

Ausmus has been a semi-regular at Tide Beach, an area approximately 13 miles from San Diego, where the attack occurred. According to reports, the victim, Dave Martin, was a swimmer training with several triathletes at the beach.

“That particular spot, I’ve been there half a dozen, 10 times,” Ausmus said. “You don’t hear of it a lot, of shark attacks in Southern California. They’re also rare in Northern California.”

Despite the tragedy, Ausmus said he wouldn’t be afraid to surf in that area in the future.

“Probably not,” he said. “If lightning strikes, would you stop going out in the rain?”

A local radio caller recently brought up the notion that Barry Zito hasn't had the same shoulder strength since he stopped surfing (due to his contract). I'm thinking he should start surfing again instanter. Best case scenario, he regains a bit of his fastball & mental acuity; better case, he's eaten by a shark. Either way, it's a win.

Sharks in the ocean... what is the world coming to?

I remember being in Florida when 9/11 occurred. Before that disaster, what seemed to be the only thing newsworthy in Florida was a similar shark attack.

And this was when Bonds was closing in on McGwire's record.

Someone should have warned the guy. The Finn brothers saw this coming 30 years ago:
And I'm lost at sea and I'm an amputee
And there was slaughter in the water when I fought her
Shark attack!

Hey!... Hey!.... Hey!..... Hey!!

Shark attack!

Well she chewed me up and she spat me out
I didn't want to meet a maneater
Shark attack!
And I'll admit, I'm a little disappointed Repoz didn't go for the Split Enz reference, but admittedly, it was probably a little too mainstream for him.

Shredder...Just be glad I didn't pull out the Surf Punks gadawful Shark Attack! from 1982.

That was a horrible staple at pitiful, trendy new-wavy Joisey clubs back in the day.

I was plucked out of my Maxwells headquarters to run (book bands/DJ/manager) a disgusto Bergen County faux "punk club"...what a freaky nightmare. Although watching Crystal Ship fans trying to pogo was a lethal gas!

Awesome! I remember when I was in the single digits listening to 'My Beach' non-stop with my brother and a family friend, with such classics as "Bird Bathroom", "Somebody Ripped My Stick", and the seminal "Big Top"!

The shark must have mistaken the human for a seal. As we all know, sharks don't attack people, just seals.

I'm glad Roy Scheider didn't live to see this. He hated whiny catchers.

I thought Ausmus had been attacked by a shark, and was preparing for the greatest Primer thread ever. This is a bit of a letdown.

So, eleven hundred men went in the water; 316 men come out and the sharks took the rest, June the 29th, 1945. Anyway, we delivered the bomb.

Sharks rarely eat people. Their primary tactile organ is their mouth, and they will test-bite anything (boat, buoy, person, etc) to see if it's something they want to eat. The fact that the test bite frequently kills its human target is an unfortunate consequence of the physics involved.

Don't want to get bitten in half by a shark trying to figure out what you are? Stay out of the ocean.

I'm disappointed that the Beach Boys never did any songs about sharks.

Sharks are so badass...Mark Sandman died just from singing a song about 'em!

Sharks patrol these waters
Sharks patrol these waters
Don't let your fingers dangle in the water

And don't you worry about the day-glo orange life preserver
It won't save you
It won't save you
Swim for the shores just as fast as you're able
Swim like a motherf**ker
Swim

Fast as that scene shifts to now
The ever glorious now the ever present
Now
Drenched in flower and deep-fat-fried
And cooled on paper towels
And then devoured

You know I spent fifteen years in a life raft
Fifteen years in a life raft
And now I got something to say
Stay in your life boats, people
Stay in your life boats, people
It's murder out there murder out there

Sharks patrol these waters
Sharks patrol these waters hey
Don't you worry about the day-glo orange life preserver
It won't save you
It won't save you
Swim for the shores just as fast as your able
Swim

What? No love for Mr. Jaws by Dickie Goodman? I'm thoroughly ashamed to say that the Mr. Jaws album is gathering dust in some dark corner of my parents' basement.
