MLB: Dodgers bring in outfielder Gonzalez

That stench of mil.drew still hanging around?...Try the Gonzo Odor Eliminator!

The Dodgers have come to an agreement with outfielder Luis Gonzalez on a one-year deal worth $7 million for the 2007 season, MLB.com has learned.

The deal is expected to be officially announced Thursday, the final day of the Winter Meetings. The club has targeted Gonzalez, who spent the last eight seasons with Arizona, for outfield help since J.D. Drew’s departure and beat out the Orioles and Cardinals for the veteran’s services.

eh.

sure as hell beats trading prospects for a corner OFer though.

As an O's fan, I can only say, "thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou." Cue the dancing bananas. Now, off to send "We don't want Jay Payton for two years" jedi mind trick messages to Duquette and Flanagan. Thankyouthanktyouthankyouthankyou.

That sub 100 OPS+ will make a nice replacement for JD Drew. Unfortunatetly proven winner Gonzo will remain much healthier than Drew and block any young players with real talent in the system...

When I first read the headline, for some reason the first thing that came to mind was Juan. Say what you will about Luis, but this is probably a better deal.

Maybe we can now FINALLYget what we want from the Dodgers... maybe a month into the season, because Coletti will realize that Luis Gonzalez has lost it, and he'll be MORe desperate for Manny

last year, little did a good job of playing players who performed. If Gonzo is sucking it up, the prospects will get their chances. Nomar is guarenteed for at least 1 DL stint. To go along with a age 38/39 Kent, the young players will have a chance to impact the club.

The one thing we have learned from watching Colletti work is that he is absolutely paranoid about having lack of depth. He stacks every position like 3 deep. Sometimes its proactive. other times, its just wasting money.

Wow. Would Dodgers fans have preferred Shawn Green to Luis Gonzalez if the Mets ate all but, say, $3.5 million of his salary and didn't get anything other than a bad Class A player in return? (Obviously, a silly exercise considering a) Shawn Green has a no-trade clause and b) The Mets haven't indicated they want to part with Green. But fun all the same...) Aren't Gren and Gonzalez roughly similar players at this stage of their careers?

or he could just call up kemp. or put loney in LF, or put nomar in LF and loney at 1b. or shift kent to 1b, nomar to lf, betemit to 2b and call up laroche.

all of those are far more prone to happen then giving theo everything he wants for Manny.

Let me be the second O's fan to say thanks. Dear lord thank you. We really didn't need this guy...

I can understand re-signing Nomar even with Loney in the fold. I can understand signing Schmidt to big money even when you have a pretty full rotation. Hell, I can even understand signing Pierre (obviously not for that much money). But how ####### stupid do you have to be to sign Luis Gonzalez for $7 million a year when you already have Andre Ethier, Juan Pierre, Matt Kemp, and James Loney.

It's one thing if you give him the minimum and tell him if he performs he can get say 300-400 PA max against RHP, but $7 freaking million a year? I wonder if Bernie Williams is next on Ned's wishlist.

I wonder if Bernie Williams is next on Ned's wishlist.

I hear he's in talks with Bernie Baseball, Juan Gone, and Slammin Sammy. He wants one more "proven winner" to round out the depth of his outfield.
   12. Walt Davis Posted: December 07, 2006 at 11:18 AM (#2253982)
Oh c'mon.

It's a one-year deal. It doesn't block anybody. You don't think the 22-year-old Kemp or 23-year-old Loney could use a little time at AAA?

Gonzo might well have fallen off a cliff, but until last year, he was league-average for his position with the bat ... and I'd guess still league-average with the glove. He could be this year's Burnitz but it's a better signing than that one was ... and as long as Coletti and Little aren't as dumb as Littlefield and Tracy, they won't keep trotting him out there if he does turn into Burnitz.

Excellent clubhouse replacement for Maddux. 75 RBI's and 20 HR's will be more than the Dodgers get out of Juan Pierre.

That's completely wrong. The Dodgers blew it huge by not closing the deal for Ramirez.

Attaboy, Gonzo. Always a Dback at heart, choosing a team to help the Dbacks win a few more games.

It appears JByrnes was right not to offer Gonzo arbitration, given his $11.5m salary last year.
   16. Bob Dernier Cri Posted: December 07, 2006 at 02:58 PM (#2254033)
This makes me moderately happy, to learn that the Rangers will not be adding Gonzalez for clubhouse ballast, or whatever they wanted him for. I am not averse to veteran leadership, but guys like Kevin Millwood and Michael Young have been shaving for some time now and might be able to provide it from within.
   17. AROM Posted: December 07, 2006 at 03:32 PM (#2254055)
and he'll be MORe desperate for Manny

Who's that 22 year old slugging .650 at Las Vegas?

Oh yeah, Matt Kemp.

I can understand a short term contract to buy some more development time for Kemp, but the Dodgers have the slugging corner OF they need. The 7 million spent on Gonzalez now probably saves them 20 million down the road for delaying Kemp's free agency.
   18. akrasian Posted: December 07, 2006 at 04:28 PM (#2254116)
I'm not thrilled by Luis Gonzalez - but this means the Red Sox demanded too much, and the Dodgers went for the free (except for budgeted cash) short term solution, while Kemp gets a little more experience. It also means that the Dodgers can keep Penny, giving them a nice rotation - and Penny available to trade at midseason if anything else is needed. Having the previous year's all star starter as the #3 guy in the rotation is a nice thing to have.

Now if the Dodgers make any other moves, it will be because it's too good an opportunity to miss, not because they NEED to make a move.
   19. Sparkles Peterson Posted: December 07, 2006 at 04:48 PM (#2254143)
This is a much, much, much better deal than paying a huge premium in salary and in talent for the extra two wins or so that Manny is worth. Still, there are better deals to be had for average corner outfielders, I'd think.

A month ago, Gonzalez to the Cardinals seemed all but a certainty. Either Jocketty has his eye on someone else or he's relying too much on this "Come play for the world champions and best fans in baseball" schtick to land players cheaply.
   20. Gaelan Posted: December 07, 2006 at 04:49 PM (#2254145)
I don't get the Dodgers. If the money they had to pay Ramirez was a big deal in that trade why would you turn around and flush 7 million down the toilet on Gonzalez.

If the prospects were too good to give up for Ramirez then why don't you play them instead of flushing 7 million down the toilet on Gonzalez.

Either way signing Gonzalez is wasting at-bats, costing you games, and flushing money down the toilet.

Gonzo used to be well above league average with the bat, but that guy doesn't exist any longer.

OPS+
2003 131
2004 119
2005 112
2006 97

I think you can argue he's been a below average outfielder for nearly two years, and the trend is horrible. What if he puts up an OPS+ of around 90 along with the defensive range you'd expect from 39 year old legs?
   23. Earvin 'Gold Stars' Johnson Posted: December 07, 2006 at 06:08 PM (#2254297)
First, I can't imagine Gonzo will be getting 193 PAs against lefties anymore, so that'll help.
Second, npurcell is exactly right in stating if Gonzo sucks he'll sit. Little is fearless in giving young players a chance to contribute, so I can't believe he'll be hellbent on running Gonzo out to LF no matter how bad he is.
While I'm not doing backflips over this deal, I don't hate it, either.

As a Padres fan, I also say thank you to the Dodgers.

Thank you Dodgers. Now they are certain to win a third straight Western Division Championship.

1) Gonzo has been hurt, right? Is he better, and did his injury affect his declline last year? He was literally unable to throw for a long stretch of time -- is that over?

2) I don't actually see Little as being fearless with the young talent. I see him as using young talent when the old talent Colletti gives him is hurt, and when he rests the old talent, which is frequently. He doesn't seem to me to give the job to young talent, but to use that talent sporadically in spot starts, though he has more spot starts than is the norm.

3) The LA Times reported that Gonzo was guaranteed the starting job by Colletti. How long does such a promise hold? Will Little sit him anyway, or be willing to pull a Tanya Harding if Gonzo is bad enough?

Well...when he was hurt and need the elbow surgery, the shortstop had to run about 1/3 of the way out to the outfield so gonzo could flip it sidearm, or even underarm a few times......Now he can throw to the cutoff man or second base, although most often on a bounce or two...and he just doesn't get much on it. Basically the only guy in he NL West who won't be taking extra bases against Gonzo is Benjie Molina.

This could turn out to be a problem for LA, as if he is benched more than he thinks he should be, (which would be any time he is benched) then he is likely to start squawking. Since he does not have the same standing and power in LA as he had in AZ, his squawking may just be ignored, or it may be more problematic. Tough to say.

one good thing colletti has shown is that he is willing to admit he makes mistakes. What i mean is, if a said player he picked up through trade or free agency is not performing as as expected or has been mouthing off, Colletti goes to the next (hopeful) solution.

I dont see this being a problem though. everyone in baseball knows about the dodgers young talent and being on a one year deal should signify to gonzo how short of a leash he has.

Because getting two productive years out of Manny for backing up the truck to Boston just makes so much sense. However bad Ned Colletti is, I thank <insert deity here> Colletti doesn't listen to this kind of silliness.

Look at all the good it did Toby Hall. I think Grittle will grit his teeth and bench the guy.
