MLBTR: Offseason Free Agent Spending By Team

1. Red Sox - $137,030,000
2. Cardinals - $129,450,000
3. Mets - $75,350,000
4. Brewers - $55,650,000
5. Angels - $52,000,000…

30.Marlins - $0

Large market teams like the Brewers never would be able to outspend their competition if we had a salary cap.

That is funny.

Well, if nothing else, it proves that the Yankees are no longer big spendthrifts in every FA market that comes along (they clearly blew everybody away last off-season, but the Yankees were also judicious in 2007-2008).

I am surprised that the Marlins didn't even sign ONE player to make it seem like they're trying.....

I know it's the simplest way to phrase it, but it always bugs me saying teams "spent" this money, as if the Sox wrote a bunch of checks that totalled $137 million.

Dodgers - $11,500,000

In recent years, they've given multiple players more than that much per year.

They had a lot of arbitration-eligible players, and signed Josh Johnson for $39M/4 years, Dan Uggla for $7.8M/1 year, Jorge Cantu for $6M/1 year, Ricky Nolasco for $3.8M/1 year, Cody Ross for $4.45M/1 year, Leo Nunez for $2M/1 year, and Anibal Sanchez for $1.25M/1 year. They just didn't sign anyone away from another MLB team . Except Mike Lamb and Jose Veras.

Not that the Marlins aren't cheapskates, but this list makes teams that commit a lot of money to their own good players before they become eligible for free agency look like cheapskates. $19.1 million for the Diamondbacks? They just committed $51.5 million to Justin Upton.

I get that, but then somebody does an article like this, and they look terrible.

What scares me is that I can't think who Milwaukee spent their $55 M on.

Randy Wolf, the return of Doug Davis, and...

$30M for Randy Wolf
$8M for Trevor Hoffman
$5.25M for Doug Davis
$4.2M for Dave Bush
$7.5M for LaTroy Hawkins (I didn't notice when that happened)
$2.15M for Gregg Zaun (ditto)
$2.1M for Craig Counsell
$0.85M for Jim Edmonds, who is now officially owed that money since they didn't cut him a week ago

That's $60 million!

(plus the arbitration-avoiders)
