The San Diego Padres are one of several teams that have expressed interest in the Twins’ young starting pitchers this week at the general managers meetings. The teams had exploratory trade talks Wednesday, and indications were they didn’t get very far after the Twins asked for Chase Headley, a switch-hitting third baseman who recently was named Texas League Player of the Year.
...
Internally, the Twins have targeted Tampa Bay’s Delmon Young and B.J. Upton, along with the New York Mets’ Carlos Gomez—all of whom rank among the top young players in baseball.
“I don’t think it’s any secret we want to build up our offense,” Twins General Manager Bill Smith said.
...
Now, there are strong indications the Twins would be willing to move [Matt] Garza for a top young hitter. Other teams are asking about Scott Baker and Kevin Slowey as well.
The Twins have shifted their philosophy because they have no major league-ready position players in their farm system.
...
The Twins’ talks with free agent pitcher Carlos Silva also have stalled. There were indications Wednesday that the team offered Silva a three-year contract worth less than $20 million.

1. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: November 08, 2007 at 06:42 AM (#2608967)That's crazy.
I guess this is why you don't see prospect-for-prospect trades very often.
That is a very defensive way to think about it. To me, you have to have more confidence in your evaluation of the player. The questions about Gomez are not about make-up or work ethic or anything like that, the sorts of things that the organization he plays for would know better than any other. They are about whether his tools will develop into actual on-field performance -- and that is a matter of projection and coaching, matters the Twins can form a judgment about from scouting him and from either believing (or not) in their development program for young outfielders.
So whether to trade for him is really about two things. First, how much do you believe in his ability compared to Garza's -- it's a straight-up challenge trade in that respect. Second, does it better arrange the available talent in the organization; do you have a surplus of young pitching that you can use to deal to make up for a problem in another area (here, the OF)?
Thus, I don't think you have to get suspicious and wonder about the deal just because the Mets are willing to trade Gomez (or the Rays are willing to deal Young). You just figure, from their end, that they have made the equal and opposite judgment: they believe in the talent on the other side, and they have a need for the pitcher more than the outfielder.
Ditto
and Ditto again.
If the Twins would trade Garza for Gomez I'd do that in a heartbeat, unfortunately I do not get a say in this.
I guess the Twins use the broad definition of "offense," which includes "pinch running" and "general boneheadedness."
