Monte Poole: the serial drama that is the Oakland Athletics continues

Brought to you by Protract & Gamble.

Those of you keeping record, and I know you’re out there, realize this is the committee’s 38th month of indecision - or that Selig & Co. simply have decided they’re not ready to announce one.

Yet there is good reason to believe this charade will end in the coming months. With the knots finally out of the Mets ownership situation and an agreement to sell the Los Angeles Dodgers, Selig and his unofficial advisory board, with powerful Chicago White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf running point, are running out of reasons to stall the A’s.

When you stall the A’s, you stall the efforts of general manager Billy Beane, whose cinematically celebrated genius remains on sabbatical until further notice. That, as much as anything Wolff says or does, eats at fans like those in the yard Friday night.

They once believed in Billy, still want to believe in him.

But after seeing so many new faces come and go, including Oakland’s last three All-Stars departing last December, they’re a bit uneasy about embracing everything Beane says or does.

Reality, in this case, is an earnest coaching staff and an underwhelming roster trapped beneath bosses presiding over baseball's lowest payroll

According to USA Today, the Padres are slightly lower than the A's in team payroll, though the difference is so small as to be basically insignificant.
