MSNBC - Baseball’s picture bright amid economic gloom

Sponsors defected, television ratings went down, the New York Yankees are out and fewer people showed up for the games. Still, Major League Baseball expects to bring in a record-breaking $7 billion this year.

Why the brighter picture amid the economic gloom? A combination of positive financial metrics that include strong value for teams, the injection of new sponsorship and a sports ad marketplace that’s “on fire”, according to Turner Sports President David Levy.

“Automotives are back in a big, big way, financials are back in a big way, insurance companies are back, so we’re seeing double-digit growth in our advertising marketplace right now for baseball,” Levy said.

How about the fact that baseball doesn't have a salary floor/cap, which allows every team to make an actual profit.

Look at the NBA. Most of the teams are losing money in a big way right now.
