Multichannel News: Eight Men In At SNY

SNY TV…As in off.

SNY, the TV home of the New York Mets and New York Jets, is fortifying its on-air roster and revamping its lineup that will now include two new debate-oriented shows.

SNY is expected to officially announce tomorrow that eight broadcasters—many of whom work for New York sports talk radio leader WFAN—that have served the channel as contributors in the past will assume more expansive roles at the regional sports network.

Officials indicate that Joe Benigno, Chris Carlin, Scott Ferrall, Jon Heyman, Marc Malusis, Sweeny Murti, Adam Schein and Brandon Tierney will now provide exclusive TV work for SNY in the New York market.

...“This announcement further represents our commitment to covering New York sports from every angle, while providing our viewers with a unique, entertaining experience,” said SNY president Steve Raab in a statement. “We’re confident that our continued investment in original entertainment programs – combined with the addition of these dynamic personalities – will continue to forge a passionate connection to sports fans throughout the region.”

I hope the network knows that its diamond in the rough is Kevin Burkhardt. He's 4 to 5 times the announcer that Gary Cohen is.

You mean the same Kevin Burkhardt that constantly says..."He's in his walk year so you know he'll play well" and "He just signed a big contract so he's a player you HAVE to keep an eye for his play"

Plus his hair is funky.

Did you hear this man do the minor league games last year? A true pleasure to listen to. You could tell he took it very seriously and went above and beyond preparing for each game. He was doing a Cyclones/Spinners game late in the season and I heard him tell me stuff about Red Sox prospects which even I didn't know. I was very impressed.

Gary Cohen's self-righteous exasperations when the game is not played up to His Code become very tired after a while.

Chris Cotter is the MAN.

Cohen takes himself too seriously and moralizes too much.

El Duque getting smacked around today. He is throwing 81-83, with one at 86. His secondary stuff is looking OK but he is throwing them too much.

El Duque's 15.00 ERA so far is less than encouraging. I can't imagine this is going to work.

Look, there's no doubt that Duque needs to throw harder than 83 MPH to be successful. But, I was encouraged that he seemed to be able to throw his other stuff pretty well. We just need to find out if/when he'll be able to get it to last year's velocity.

Pelfrey looking pretty good, actually. If this is an indication, we need him more than El Duque.

Don't hit me!

Surprised about Benigno... he's got a face made for radio.

Carlin is pretty good. I think Schein is good, if he's the guy I'm thinking of.

Heyman is, obviously, a clown.

I think we've been too hard on Pelfrey. Brandon Webb hadn't made it to the big leagues at the age Pelfrey will be this season. I'd still like to see him spend more time in AAA though.

Of course, he is getting roughed up a little bit in his second inning.

Wow, a Scott Ferrall sighting.

I don't know how I would react if someone on my team gave up an extra-base hit to a guy named "Skip" in the regular season.

Choosing between Duque and Pelfrey at this point is like choosing between a punch in the face and a punch in the stomach. If Duque can show me that he can throw harder in his next start, I go with him. The Mets don't need a fifth starter until April 12th so maybe he can build up some arm strength by then.

Mike Pelfrey's line on the day:

4.1 IP, 13 hits, 8 runs, 1 K, 1 BB, 1 hr.

And a lot of the hitters were faced were the scrub Cardinal players.

It was awful and I couldn't tear myself away. He certainly isn't ready now.

Seriously, as bad as Duque and Pelfrey looked today, the Mets should be considering going outside the organization for the fifth starter. Maybe someone like David Wells.

In a few years, this outing is going to stand out as either Pelfrey's lowest point or the instance when we should have realized he's never going to put it all together.

I think we've been too hard on Pelfrey.

I think anyone that still considers him a "prospect" is being entirely too generous. Pelfrey has not shown any indication that he's anything but pure garbage in the majors. And a 5th grader could supply a complete scouting report on him. He needs to overhaul his entire approach and arsenal - and I've yet to hear a word from him or the Mets to indicate that they're taking this route.

I think anyone that still considers him a "prospect" is being entirely too generous.

He does keep the ball in the park, having give up only 7 homers in 94 IP. He doesn't need good k/bb ratios to be an average starting pitcher, 95-100 ERA+ guy and there's value in that, especially when he's cheap. But, right now, he doesn't look like he's ever going to be anything more than a back of the rotation guy.

Is Sosa stretched out enough to be the fifth starter when needed?

So here are the options right now:

1) Go with Duque. Duque's shown he can be good when healthy enough to throw 86-88.
2) Go with Pelf. He's healthy but not consistently good when healthy, to say the least.
3) Go with Sosa. He's good for a 4.75 ERA.
4) Get someone else.

I think I choose Option 3 until Option 1 is health enough to throw harder.

Burkhardt is a muy young dude and I understand he has to kiss Mike & Dogs ass (didn't Dog help him get the FAN gig?)....but can he turn a computer on once in a while instead of using The Elias and Madden Sports Bureau for his info.

How the #### do you grow so young and NOT use Baseball-Ref by now...cripes, even Miquel Kay has mentioned it (of course, he gave the wrong name and info...but deep electro-boltage will do that)

Don't get me wrong...I like having him in the booth instead of the worthless dweeb in the stands bit. But let's see some Boog Sciambi-like saber-growth!

Scott Ferrall is a boob. He can make me flip away just when he starts to speak. Given that, I wonder if he has deviated from the crap he used to spew on his radio show.
