‘Multiple teams’ believe Cubs catcher Willson Contreras will be available for trade this winter

Multiple teams believe Cubs catcher Willson Contreras will be available in trade talks this winter, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Being available in trade talks doesn’t mean Contreras will be dealt, and Passan’s report didn’t definitively say Contreras is available. However, it shows the Cubs are open to changing their roster this offseason, one where they’ve already changed managers following a disappointing 84-win season.

Team president Theo Epstein has said time and time again he doesn’t believe in untouchable players, and at his end-of-season presser, he said the Cubs are open to roster changes.

“We’re open to change. We’re open-minded about this roster, and I expect to have a lot of trade discussions this winter,” Epstein said in September. “I think a lot of the players on this year’s team are gonna be part of the next Cubs championship team, so we want to be mindful of that.

The Braves checked in with everyone and concluded many teams believe this.

Robo ump is coming so that will fix the defensive issies. And if the add the DH to the NL there is no reason for the cubs to trade him now.

Robo umps aren't likely to come to MLB during the three remaining years the Cubs control Contreras.

If Contreras is really worth -30 runs per season as a pitch framer, then I suppose the Cubs need to trade him and also that's a pretty strong argument for robo-umpires NOW, if such a gimmicky "skill" is so valuable.

I just can't accept that pitch framing is that important, and the discrepancy between the good and the bad at framing is so stark.

The umpires are absolutely terrible at their jobs if pitch framing exists.
