Multiple Teams Miffed Over Donaldson Trade

The issue, according to [The Athletic], is the unclear health status of Donaldson, who has not played in the majors since May 28 because of a calf injury. The former American League MVP began a minor league rehab assignment on Aug. 29 and was placed on revocable trade waivers by the Blue Jays that same day. He was traded to Cleveland just before the Aug. 31 deadline, meaning he is eligible to play for the Indians in the postseason.

By rule, a player must be certified as healthy in order to be placed on trade waivers.

Cleveland and Toronto are skirting the spirit of the rule here, but it’s a risk all the same. (Original report is from Rosenthal at The Athletic.)

I'm not sure what there is to be upset about. It's not like Toronto told teams "no Donaldson is hurt" but in reality he is 100% healthy. Every team in baseball should have known what was up with Donaldson. If they were concerned about him being moved they had the chance to claim him on waivers.

If the rule is that the team placing him on waivers is the one who has to certify him healthy, then that's not much of a rule.

There was a note that a traded player must immediately go on the active roster, but Cleveland DLed him right after the trade, and he's now on another rehab assignment.

Also, Cleveland has fewer wins than Boston, NYY, and Houston, so (I think) they would get first crack at the waiver wire anyway.

The Yankees/Red Sox and Astros were still free to trade for Donaldson all the same. This seems like sour grapes—they didn’t want to give up prospects to get a guy who might not play again, and then when they missed him it’s all “well the trade was probably illegal anyway.”

Also: awfully high card for the Astros to play. Suddenly morality is a major concern when conducting deadline deals with the Jays, eh?

The problem seems to be that he wasn't on the DL for the minimum amount of time you're supposed to be on the DL? But he's only played one game in the minors (last Monday) since the trade anyway.

My understanding is he went completely unclaimed.

I read the original Athletic story, and it seems to me that the Indians were very aggressive in how they conducted themselves, but all interested teams knew the issue(s) (MLB made sure that they had everybody in the loop).

Can't see this as more than crying over spilled milk.

That was the last game of the minor league season. Since then he's played a few playoff games as an Akron RubberDuck.

If he's activated today he'll miss out on playing against Toronto's farm team for the Eastern League Championship.

The trophy will belong to either the Fisher Cats or Rubber Ducks. God I love minor league baseball.

Personally, I was rooting for a Cat Fishers vs. Duck Rubbers final.

Minor league playoff games aren't included in BB-Ref's stats? This changes everything!

For that matter, it's also mighty rich of the Yankees to complain about suspect deals in a world where Captain Intangibles is poised to become the Arnold Johnson of our time.

I don't understand what people are confused about. Donaldson was unhealthy, then healthy enough to go on trade waivers, then immediately went back on the DL.
