Murray is way correct about the New York Times sport section. You get the feeling they none of them are remotely interested in sports; they all seem like wannabee news columnists who were shunted off to sports and are hoping to somehow demonstrate that they deserve to be promoted out of the sports ghetto.

A strained hamstring delayed Tatis’ major league debut until June 6, although the injury might have worked to the Padres’ advantage because it delayed the start of the rookie’s major league service time.

Ah, one last bit of Murray.

Finally, there is one person I would like to recognize and thanks for his years of service, but I’ll leave it at that because anything more would be deleted. Nevertheless, he has my sincere thanks.
HE MEANS STAN MUSIAL, MISTER PRESIDENT

Murray Chass is still alive?

another classic Murray bit: quoting a dead man

"There is nothing good these days about the Times sports section, certainly not the editors and not what the editors publish under the pretense of sports. This prompts me to recall what my friend and colleague, Dave Anderson, said a few years after he retired when I asked him what he thought of the Times sports section.

“It sickens me,” he said."

Not sure why Chass takes so much credit for something that Omar Minaya seemed to have more to do with. It is unclear if Chass speaks Spanish or the elder Tatis speaks English (Did the two men ever meet or speak?)so that might involve several other people as well, and some interesting background. Did Chass do more than write a column about the son attempting to meet with his father, which a newspaper re-published and the story was passed on to Tatis?

We are all looking forward to his new book which he says he doesn't enjoy working on as much as his columns.A good pre-sale line for the cover! The blurb could also include a reference to his years with the NYY - "It sickens me" .

The book is about religion in olden days and he wrote it with the help of some, what they call disciples - Matthew , Mark, Murray, Luke and John. They are arguing about billing and name above the title, etc.

Chass's blog is ending? I hope his health is OK.

Deleted by who? It's Murray's blog; isn't it?

That's a pretty big whiff in his introduction to Tatis: He debuted on Opening Day as the Padres starting SS---which was a surprise and kind of a big deal---and proceeded to hit .300/.360/.510 through the end of April before the injury cost him 34 games.

Having never seen a picture of Chass before, I was surprised: I had imagined an older, hairless, red-faced, somewhat fragile-looking man with spectacles and an angular jaw stiffly set, maybe a bit of spittle on his lips.

Instead I get a bearded guy in leather that looks like he's gonna beat the sh!t out of me if I don't get off his g*ddamed lawn.

#1 I have felt this way for years but I am a Blues fan and one of the hockey columnists wrote a beautiful piece on the Blues when they won the Stanley Cup. Never in a million years would I have expected it. His name was Ben Shpigel. Quality stuff.

Is the one person he wants to thank himself and if he wrote it, he would have to delete it ? Such a conundrum

Right, the injury didn't delay Tatis' serving time - he was already in the majors and therefore still accrues service time while on the major league IL.

Likely, he's conflated Tatis with Vlad jr -- stuff like that happens to us all. Of course this is the sort of thing those pesky editors at the NYT might have pointed out ... or given the current state of news proofreading and checking, probably not.

I took it to mean a colleague who has edited his post-Times stuff for years.
if so, I am going with the idea of that guy deliberately sneaking a grammar error into the first sentence.
