Murray Chass on Baseball: Belatedly an Owner Makes a Right Decision

And Belatedly a Resuscitated BBWAA Writer Makes a Wrong Decision…or two. (actually, Chass has some good stuff on the Times/Red Sox tango)

I have written here recently of being uncertain about whether I would resume voting, which I was not permitted to do with The New York Times, and if I did, would I vote for Rice.

Although I don’t think writers should vote for the Hall of Fame, I have lost that fight. As long as writers continue to vote and I believe Jack Morris belongs in the Hall, I decided I would vote because Morris needs all the votes he can get.

I also voted for Henderson and Rice, the first an obvious selection, Rice not so obvious, a borderliner actually. But I marked an X next to his name for two reasons.

...Bresciani also noted that Rice, who didn’t have a reputation as a particularly good outfielder, led the American League and was second in the majors in outfield assists 1975-86.

But the clincher was that Rice was at the end of his time on the ballot. I figured the vote on Rice would be close and that if he fell one vote short, I didn’t want to be the voter who deprived him of election.

What an ugly ballot. Rice, Morris, Henderson. One good choice, two not so good and ignored a batch of better players. Why did he vote Rice? Led in RBI and Home Runs during his career. Why vote Morris? Led in wins and complete games during his career. Oy vey. Also citing Rice's defense as a plus? ::shakes head::

At least he didn't say 'most feared' for either Rice or Morris.

I may not have agreed with the selections on his ballot, but his choices were not as poorly considered as his later schmaltz about the hockey game at Wrigley field. An opinion based on nothing but the compulsive need to form and argue an opinion.

I didn't realize "having a clear conscience" was a valid reason for a writer to vote for someone. At least Murray can sleep at night now.

Also

Rice, who didn’t have a reputation as a particularly good outfielder, led the American League and was second in the majors in outfield assists 1975-86.

He played more games in the OF than anyone over these years too. Winfield and Cruz are close at #2 and #3 but there is a drop of 100+ games to Evans, Parker and Foster.

Pathetic.

Weird article. Could someone remind me why Chass has a Hall of Fame ballot and my 12 year old son doesn't let alone explain why Chass votes and Bill James, Vin Scully and a hundred others with better understanding of the sport don't.
