It’s unclear whether he lost the gig for his choice of rooting interest, lack of musical taste, or both.

If the Cubs win the World Series, that song has to go - "classic" or not. Personally I prefer the recently recorded live song "Go All the Way" by Eddie Vedder. It's getting a lot of airplay on XRT. Or at the least defer back to the "Hey hey" song from years ago.

The thing is, to my mind, that song was resurrected. I heard it quite a bit in '84. Then it went away for a hell of a long time. Then it came back with a vengeance. It wasn't this big the first time around.

The only good thing about that song is the hours it has saved me this summer in exiting the ballpark. As the fans stand around and sing it for five minutes after each win, my seatmates and I head down the ramp and are out the door before the mass stirs.

Wow, I'd totally forgotten about that song...and with good reason. Although anything that immortalizes "Mike Bielecki: #2 starting pitcher on a division champion" has some nostalgic entertainment value.

For the record, I didn't mind the remix version of "Go Cubs Go" that DJ Roman did last year.

Anyway, it could be worse. "Don't Stop Believing", anyone?

Auburn once had an eagle fly into their stadium during a game. He flew around, the stjdents started to cry "war eagle" and then the bird crashed and died. Ever since then, the Barn uses the phrase "War Eagle."

It isn't quite that simple, but again, neither is pinning down the actual genesis of the chant or the eagle's first appearance at an Auburn football game. Either way, War Eagle chants won't get you a free round in Tuscaloosa.

Seeing the eagle fly through the stadium and onto a perch or the field is one of the best pre-game moments in all of sports, imo.

I am going to be there this Saturday for my first home Alabama game since 2006. Needless to say I am pumped up (though from what I understand Saban moved the Bear's voiceover earlier in the pre-game).

My only regret is that there is probably no way I can get to City Cafe this weekend.

I went to my first Bama home game last year when they whipped UT (mostly in the 2nd half) that was a wonderful time the three of us had (Nebraska, and two Minnesota grads). We sat near the UT band and prepared ourselves for hearing Rocky Top 1,000 times. Fortunately Bama delivered the beatdown. The Bama montage before the game is pretty cool, they certainly took some good elements from Nebraska's intro packages, as Nebraska was the first major DI school to have its own video jumbo boards installed before the '94 season. Mizzou and KU hated those things so much, that and the stat board which was set right at field level.

I'm headed back to the Grove this year in Oxford, MS (best women I've ever seen on a campus) and then to Fla. at Vandy. Visiting all of the SEC venues is a must for me.

"Go Cubs Go" is a great song. You haters can all go suck a Frosty Malt.

What's more, the song did Cubdom a favor back in '84 by being the reason why WGN-AM retired the execrable "It's a Beautiful Day For a Ballgame" as the station's Cubs broadcast theme. Funny thing is, WGN doesn't use "Go Cubs Go" as the theme anymore, even though that's the reason why Steve Goodman wrote the song in the first place. Now they use some rocked-up jingle called "Let's Go Cubs (This Is Our Year)".

I am at 8 right now. All I have left is Mississippi State, Florida, Georgia, and Kentucky. Mississippi State is the most egregious of the four, considering Tuscaloosa is about 80 miles away from Columbus. Of course now I am in LSU country (which is always fun as an Alabama fan).

The Grove is one of the greatest experiences in sports. I don't know how they do it, but Ole Miss has more hot women then any other school I have ever visited. Conversely, those in Starkville look like they drive trucks for a living. I am heading to Tennessee in a few weeks when Bama plays them on the Third Saturday of October. I may hate the school, but Knoxville is the prettiest road trip in the SEC.

Retro, I am thinking of coming to Chicago in a few weeks. The difference between now and August is I am finally being paid.
And retro, the Ole Miss coeds are well worth any trips.
Inge-the problem with Fayetteville is if you drive. Its hell and gone from the rest of the SEC.

The Grove is like the Miller Lite ads which depict a bar of perfection, service, women, all the bounces going your way. Of course The Grove is actually very different, but it is very simply the perfect setting for a tailgate. The people are wonderful, the women are gorgeous, the food spreads are varied, and impressive. The band, The Pride of the South, playing 'Slow Dixie' amongst all the beautiful trees, the setting is just magnificent. Just don't leave your liquids unattended otherwise they will be confiscated and dumped out by the police.

I know ladies in the SEC get dressed up pretty much at most campuses (didn't see much of this in Gainesville, which many SEC fans don't truly believe is a 'southern city'), but the Ole Miss ladies take it to the highest levels. Heels, light sundresses, spending hours on their hair. I can't wait to go back.

I've seen a ton of college football in the Big XII and Big 10/11, but it doesn't seem to mean as much or match the excitement of going to a game in the SEC.
