Mustaches begin to grow back into fashion - Columbia Missourian

I have been mustachiophobic for many years. Where’s my razor?

Aaron Perlut, chairman of the American Mustache Institute, said Americans have been unnecessarily harsh toward mustached men for many years. The trend peaked in the late 1970s, when men wore a perm, a good turtleneck and a mustache, Perlut said.

Celebrities and sports figures who were part of that movement include: singers David Crosby, Lionel Ritchie, George Harrison and Ringo Starr; actor Tom Selleck; and major-league baseball pitchers Rollie Fingers and Catfish Hunter.

Post-1970s, facial hair went into a decline. Now, apparently, it’s on an upswing.

Perlut credits actors like Brad Pitt and George Clooney and sports figures like Brendan Ryan for helping to nudge the mustache back into the mainstream. He also attributes the resurgence to the 20-somethings who have embraced the trend.

A mustache is not permanent like a tattoo, Perlut said, adding, “It’s a simple form of expression.”

Dunavin prefers to think of his as more of a nod to the Victorian era.

“It’s a dignified, classic American look,” he said.

....

Mustaches on St. Louis Cardinals baseball players last season inspired MU seniors Elliot Hasse and Drew Roper to grow them.

Roper, 23, said it gave him an excuse, “If they can do it, I can do it.”

He's apparently forgetting the heyday of the goatee in the mid '90s.

Trotsky had a goatee (& great hair besides). Stalin had a mustache.

No more needs to be said.

Is it still too soon for the Hitler mustache to make a comeback?

He also has apparently not been to Brooklyn any time during the last five years or so.

If it is, then that would explain the glares I get from my co-workers.

There's actually a hipster guy I see often walking around my neighborhood with a Hitler mustache. I'm sure he thinks he's making a statement of some kind, but I can't imagine what it is, unless it's "Please punch me in the face repeatedly."

Sports figures like...Brendan Ryan? Does the average person even know who Brendan Ryan is?

You're missing the much more obvious statement of "I'm deliberately pissing off my Jewish non-hipster mom."

Indeed. Clean shaven is the way to go.

Yes but a Charlie Chaplin mustache is OK.

I think you all are underestimating the massive influence Brendan Ryan has had on our culture. At this point in history, every man who shoots a gun, kisses a woman, drives a car or grounds out is, whether he realizes it or not, imitating Brendan Ryan.

I have grown a plethora of facial hair over the years, more out of boredom than anything else. I've done the Rob Zombie, I've Fu Manchued, and I have indeed gone full Rollie. (Eugene Hutz can #### himself.) But it's always been temporary, really, returning to the normalcy of clean-shaven eventually. To be one way all the time is boring.

As a currently mustachioed 21 year old who has spent the last 4 weeks raising money for prostate cancer research for Movember, I approve.

But I can guarantee girls still don't like mustaches. I'm gonna miss my distinguished duster.

I used to grow a beard at least once a year until I met my soon-to-be wife. She hates facial hair of any kind, and while she has told me that she won't try and stop me from doing it, I'm pretty sure I'll get laid about once a month if I take the plunge and grow one.

As an incorrigibly lazy person, I hate shaving. Also, it hurts like hell, especially in the winter.

jamie is right - most of us do NOT like mustaches

harry
try one of those lather heaters. and after you finish shaving, rub your face with some eucerin cream. or even better, get your woman to do it.

or get an electric shaver

or you be tellin your woman you are gonna stop shaving and she say FINE!!!!!

and you know what THAT means
   20. dirk Posted: November 30, 2009 at 04:01 AM (#3398862)
only a woman would recommend an electric razor to a man with sensitive skin.

my advice to reduce the burn in any season is to shave in a hot shower with a healthy lather. let me also take this opportunity to say the mach 3 vibrating razor is the finest shaving tool ever bestowed to man.

My dad has had his mustache since before I was born and I don't think I'd recognize him without it. Mustahces have stayed popular amongst Arab men. I don't like them but will probably eventually grow a goatee or beard.
   22. base ball chick Posted: November 30, 2009 at 04:27 AM (#3398871)
dirk

sorry - the hot lather one i know about because my husband uses that

but us people with sensitive skin on our legs ovary up and use an electric shaver. and i do apologise, it was very sexist of me to equate a man's face with a woman's legs
   23. dirk Posted: November 30, 2009 at 04:43 AM (#3398878)
you can use any kind of razor you want on your legs. as long as it's pink.

russlan- you don't like arab men?

The Gillette Fusion represents a drop in quality from the Mach 3, but the shaving cream they sell under that brand is top notch. I don't shave in the shower (clumsy, waste of water) but do so immediately after exit. A good shaving cream will take care of the dryness. And work that stuff into a lather.

Not counting beards grown in long camping trips, I have never grown anything other than sideburns. I think we are a long way from guys growing mustaches out of anything but irony. There are some guys who can pull it off in the current fashion context, but they are few and far between.

The guys in the article claiming to be adventurous with the mustache + soul patch: sorry. That's just another form of hipster beard. Fly the mustache solo and then you deserve to be written up in the newspaper.

Is it still too soon for the Hitler mustache to make a comeback?

I heard on Fox News that Obama tried, but decided against it when it came in gray.

Not in the Biblical sense (any men, now that I mention.) I am Arab-Canadian and was just making a comment to avoid studying.

I always shave in the shower -- haven't used any sort of shaving cream in longer than I can remember. Probably the mid-'90s. I've had a goatee -- more apropos, I guess, a Van Dyke -- for 7 or so years this time around, which is the longest I've ever maintained one (by, *ahem*, coincidence, I've also had more chins than I like during this same period), though I've had one off & on since, oh, the mid-'80s, I guess. (The idea of a mustache without a goatee makes my skin crawl, probably because I didn't grow up around Arab men, porn actors or Village People. Same goes, to a lesser extent, for a full beard.)

I generally have long sideburns as well ... I mean, it's not like Elvis is using 'em these days. It took me so damned long to be able to raise a decent crop (well into my 20s) that I have a hard time denying them ...

to avoid razor burn use one of these and make sure you use a decent cream, badger hair brush and alum block.

modern gilette, etc. razors cause burn because they use too many blades which rip the hairs out of your face rather than cutting them while also causing you to press too hard which leads to burn. With a safety razor you just hold the razor at an approx. 45 degree angle to your face and let the weight of the razor provide the force, gives a much smoother and irritation free shave.
