He's apparently forgetting the heyday of the goatee in the mid '90s.
He also has apparently not been to Brooklyn any time during the last five years or so.
If it is, then that would explain the glares I get from my co-workers.
You're missing the much more obvious statement of "I'm deliberately pissing off my Jewish non-hipster mom."
Indeed. Clean shaven is the way to go.
Trotsky had a goatee (& great hair besides). Stalin had a mustache.

a freaking men
Yes but a Charlie Chaplin mustache is OK.
I think you all are underestimating the massive influence Brendan Ryan has had on our culture. At this point in history, every man who shoots a gun, kisses a woman, drives a car or grounds out is, whether he realizes it or not, imitating Brendan Ryan.
But I can guarantee girls still don't like mustaches. I'm gonna miss my distinguished duster.
I used to grow a beard at least once a year until I met my soon-to-be wife. She hates facial hair of any kind, and while she has told me that she won't try and stop me from doing it, I'm pretty sure I'll get laid about once a month if I take the plunge and grow one.
As an incorrigibly lazy person, I hate shaving. Also, it hurts like hell, especially in the winter.
harry
try one of those lather heaters. and after you finish shaving, rub your face with some eucerin cream. or even better, get your woman to do it.
or get an electric shaver
or you be tellin your woman you are gonna stop shaving and she say FINE!!!!!
and you know what THAT means
my advice to reduce the burn in any season is to shave in a hot shower with a healthy lather. let me also take this opportunity to say the mach 3 vibrating razor is the finest shaving tool ever bestowed to man.
sorry - the hot lather one i know about because my husband uses that
but us people with sensitive skin on our legs ovary up and use an electric shaver. and i do apologise, it was very sexist of me to equate a man's face with a woman's legs
russlan- you don't like arab men?
Not counting beards grown in long camping trips, I have never grown anything other than sideburns. I think we are a long way from guys growing mustaches out of anything but irony. There are some guys who can pull it off in the current fashion context, but they are few and far between.
The guys in the article claiming to be adventurous with the mustache + soul patch: sorry. That's just another form of hipster beard. Fly the mustache solo and then you deserve to be written up in the newspaper.
Is it still too soon for the Hitler mustache to make a comeback?
I heard on Fox News that Obama tried, but decided against it when it came in gray.
Not in the Biblical sense (any men, now that I mention.) I am Arab-Canadian and was just making a comment to avoid studying.
I generally have long sideburns as well ... I mean, it's not like Elvis is using 'em these days. It took me so damned long to be able to raise a decent crop (well into my 20s) that I have a hard time denying them ...
modern gilette, etc. razors cause burn because they use too many blades which rip the hairs out of your face rather than cutting them while also causing you to press too hard which leads to burn. With a safety razor you just hold the razor at an approx. 45 degree angle to your face and let the weight of the razor provide the force, gives a much smoother and irritation free shave.
