Name game: Britton says wife, Yanks led to spelling change

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Even Zack Britton gets confused about the proper spelling of his first name.

Known throughout his baseball career as Zach, the 31-year-old New York Yankees reliever said last week that going forward his name should be spelled Zack.

“I was born with a ‘ch’, sorry, excuse me, the ‘ck,‘” Britton said Monday after his first pre-spring training workout at the New York Yankees’ minor league complex.

The sort of loopiness that one wishes were more prevalent this off-season.

Now all I need to remember is whether it's Brittan, Britten, Britton, Britin, or England.

Dear, Zap Brannigan: No one cares. This is America, no one can spell anyway. We are all loosers.

His parents named him... Zackary?

And then told him the abbreviation for that is... Zach?

OK, according to the Social Security Administration, 461 boys were born in the United States in 1987 with the name "Zackary". That's a lot more than I would have guessed.

13,206 Zachary
686 Zachery
538 Zachariah
461 Zackary
322 Zackery

136 Britton (as first name)

I read it as the Orioles introduced that screwup.

From TFA:

Britton said with a smile that he’s “blaming my parents” because they had told him it was an ‘h.’

His name was spelled “Zachary G. Britton” by Major League Baseball when the Baltimore Orioles selected him in the third round of the 2006 amateur draft

He is listed as “Zackary Grantantero Britton” in the California Birth Index, “Zackary Grant Antero Britton” in his 2017 Texas voter registration and “Zackary G. Britton” in his 2015 Nevada voter registration. His auto registrations have been as “Zackary” and “Zack.”

I'm waiting for the first ZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzACK!ary. If nothing else, he'd immediately become eligible for MMA and the NBA.

Zack Greinke is also a "Zackary". I was alarmed by all these misspelled names but apparently it was only 3% as common as Zachary, so having two in MLB is quite a coincidence.
