NatsFest Fallout - Strasburg’s Loose Bodies, Harper’s Knee, Espinosa’s Wrist (Shoulder), More!

Strasburg finally opens up at NatsFest about cavorting with loose bodies:

Espinosa also had an interesting quote regarding the broken wrist (shredded shoulder} he played with last season. He said he should have rested the injury when it first occurred in April (really 2012).

I shouldn’t have [played]. But at the same time, I’m not the doctor reading the film. So yea, I shouldn’t have been playing on a broken wrist the whole year. Like I said, if you’re told you have a bruise, you play through a bruise. Everybody plays through bumps and bruises. I wouldn’t have played if I knew I had a broken wrist. I shouldn’t have been playing at all.

The Danny Espinosa story is one of wasted opportunities. The Nats might be looking at a brighter story in 2012 and 2013 had everybody involved not buried their heads in the sand about the condition of his shoulder. But the damage has been done and now he finds himself just another minor leaguer fighting for a job against underwhelming competition.

can I ask a dumb question: Do these guys not have their own doctors that they go to?

I mean at this pt in time given: How much money is on the line and; how many stories about fqd up team doctors there are shouldnt everybody playing at this level just go to his own doctor? What am I missing?

What am I missing?


1) Players do go to their own doctors for second, third, etc opinions. Players, not teams, decide who performs their surgeries.
2) The teams are footing the bill, so it makes sense for them to have some say.
3) Medicine is really hard.
