NBC Sports/Gleeman: Cardinals interested in Miguel Tejada?

On the heels of manager Tony La Russa saying last week that the Cardinals need to find a big bat to hit behind Albert Pujols, Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the team is interested in Miguel Tejada.

Tejada would be an interesting pickup on a few different levels. First and foremost he’s leading the league with a .355 batting average and hitting .355/.378/.521 overall, so that would seemingly fit La Russa’s description of a big bat even if the 35-year-old is highly unlikely to keep up that type of production.

Guys like Matt Holliday have also been linked to St. Louis recently, but the Cardinals have received little production from the left side of the infield and finding a hitter like Tejada who can man shortstop or third base would allow them to keep their better-hitting outfielders in the lineup as well.

With that said, Tejada to the Cardinals isn’t quite a perfect fit. For one thing, Khalil Greene is making his way back from anxiety problems and should be ready to rejoin the team soon. Plus, Tejada’s defense at shortstop has declined to the point that he’s somewhere between “solidly below average for the position” and “terrible.”

I saw Tejada play once, and he's clearly a great defensive player.
And who can't find room for a .355 hitter? They don't grow on trees like they used to.

I just don't see the 'Stros trading with the Cards.

Molson retirees in the province of Newfoundland will see their monthly allotment of beer fall from six dozen

Current workers will see their allotment drop from 72 dozen bottles a year

Why didn't I know about this before I chose a career.

Who do you think is a better defensive SS going forward - Tejada or Jeter?

Probably Jeter, just because I would expect him to age more gracefully than Tejada. But in 2-3 years, I would want them both moved down the defensive spectrum if they were on my team. It sure seems to me that both have the base skill set needed to succeed defensively at 3B: a strong and accurate arm, reasonably quick reflexes, but slow footwork that has/will diminish overall range. Also, I don't know if either will hit well enough in a few years to really be assets at 1B/LF/DH, so 3B is probably their best bet to maximize overall value.

With the way Brendan Ryan is hitting/playing defense, Tejada wouldn't be much of an upgrade at SS. They've both been worth 1.5 WAR, so far, and Ryan spent time on the DL and was a late-innings defensive replacement for the first month or so. While ryan's not going to have a +40 year at SS, Tejada isn't going to hit .355, either. If he could play second or third, he'd be much more valuable to the team.

An infield of Tejada/Ryan/GreeneT/Pujols would be an amazing upgrade. I say this as a huge proponent of the skip-to-2B move, which isn't working out like I had hoped (but he's showing promise!)
