NBC Sports: Off-duty cop shoots 2 in lot after Angels game

An off-duty police officer shot and wounded two men who had assaulted him in the crowded Angel Stadium parking lot after Wednesday night’s Colorado Rockies-Los Angeles Angels game, authorities said.

The officer, who was walking to his car with his wife and two small children about 25 minutes after the game, was hit in the head with a bottle or club, police Sgt. Tim Schmidt said.

“We think he was the victim of a crime,” Schmidt said.

Sounds like the Angels are serious about earning the Los Angeles part of their overly long name.

Dirty Harry could have handled that with a sneer.

boy, that's grim. he had his kids with him?

i've never felt threatened at dodger stadium, but every year it seems like something happens in the parking lot.

I've been an Angels' season ticket holder since 1994. While this is obviously an exception rather than the rule, things have started becoming much hairier at the Placid A. The Dodgers' series this year was especially bad.

I've definitely noticed a different type of crowd at the Big A over the past 5 or 6 years.

Concur. Back when the team stunk, only the diehards would show up. Nowadays, everyone shows up, including guys who become troublemakers after a few brews. The winning is great, but the crowd experience has taken a turn for the unpleasant. Or maybe I'm just getting old.

“We heard three shots and turned around and I thought, ’Those are gun shots,”’ Cordova told KNX radio. “One of the guys I was with said ’No, it’s not’ but then we heard sirens.”

Cordova said she then walked toward the scene.

Those who end up getting quoted in the newspapers, that's who. You think they're crazy? Yeah, crazy like a fox!

According to Cedric the Entertainer in the Kings of Comedy movie, white people. Though it doesn't sound like he was right this time.

The current crowds are differentiated from the older crowds by the presence of actual people.

It is more than just that --- after 2002, the small crowds were gone and the drunks were more prevalent, but the vibe was friendly. That has changed in the last couple of years -- there is a certain meanness in the crowd on certain nights.

It sounds like the louts who used to go to Giants games at Candlestick moved down to Anaheim of Disneyland of Orange County of Los Angeles of northern Tijuana?

That's just the passion being stoked by the intensity of the storied Angels-Rockies rivalry fostered by the glory of interleague play.

That's interesting. I'm there quite a bit and I haven't really noticed anything. I think you definitely have a lot more people and thus the potential for more holes, but I haven't really noticed any general change in attitude. It still seems pretty laid back to me. Of course, if you look around the stadium and you can't figure out who the ####### is...

It seems like a lot more of those douchbag "bros" who go to the games. The guys who are tatted up, drive big trucks and try to mad dog you at all time. (My apology if this describes any of you) I'm pretty sure that's where most of the problems come from.

Also, Artie has done a successful job marketing the team to Hispanics and changing the demographics of the fan base.

I remember going to a couple A's-Angels games with A's gear on back when I was going to college at UCSD in the 2005-2006 time frame, and the stadium was very friendly.

What's this mean? Guess the Nielsen ratings of major sporting events?

"Wimbledon, Mikey?"

"I dunno, Dawg, the Williams sisters got eliminated early. 1.6?"

I think they shove a bottle of strawberry-kiwi flavored alcohol in your face yelling "chug it, pansy".

It might not be the tats and the trucks, but there is definitely more mad dogging going on --- in my section at least. I don't know if it has something to so with the availability of season tickets through secondary markets these days, but it wasn't this way too long ago.

Staring someone down, usually until a physical confrontation occurs. It is ancient gang lingo.

some guy started to mad dog me at the starting line of the LA marathon -- he was trying to push past me but i wasn't in the mood to give ground, it was right around starting time -- but i had on my shades and i guess he couldn't decide if i was just some cissy anglo or a real piece of danger. i almost wet my shorts.

Do people only mad dog others in Southern California? I assumed it happened everywhere...

I've also been told that you can use the term "ice grill" instead of "mad dog".

I really don't know, Steve Sparks. Last time I was really in contact with gangsters was when I worked security at a hospital. That was over ten years ago.

follow-up: Man partially paralyzed after Angels shooting

One of two brothers accused of assaulting an off-duty Anaheim police officer outside Angel Stadium has been partially paralyzed after the officer shot both suspects.

Carlos Velazquez, a Camp Pendleton Marine, remained hospitalized Friday, two days after the officer’s bullet struck his spinal cord in the stadium parking lot after the Angels game.

The Marine and his brother, Jose Velazquez of Ontario, are accused of hitting the officer with a beer bottle and choking him as he was leaving with his family.
