Gamecocks on the board in the second. Connor Bright double, Tanner English single.

UNC gets a two-run HR from Brian Holberton in the bottom of the 2nd after a pitch gets away from Wynkoop and hits Michael Russell on the foot.

Quick hook for Benton Moss one out into the third after a walk to Chase Vergason. Tyler Thornton comes in for UNC. Not a big surprise.

   204. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 11, 2013 at 01:06 PM (#4466851)
Pankake fans, Dantlzer lines to right. 2-1 UNC after 2 1/2. South Carolina had Adam Westmoreland throwing in the bottom of the second. Don't expect Wynkoop to stick around long if he gets into trouble either.

-- MWE
   205. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 11, 2013 at 01:11 PM (#4466858)
And on cue - one-out single by Landon Lassiter ends Wynkoop's afternoon, brings Westmoreland into the game to face Colin Moran.

-- MWE

EDIT: Westmoreland is a big guy, listed at 6'5" and 270, looks bigger.
   206. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 11, 2013 at 01:15 PM (#4466861)
Moran hits into a double play for the second time in the game.

-- MWE
   207. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 11, 2013 at 01:38 PM (#4466889)
South Carolina threatens in the fifth with a somewhat typical college rally: walk, error, sacrifice. Second and third with one out and the 2/3/4 hitters coming up.

-- MWE
   208. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 11, 2013 at 01:41 PM (#4466893)
Thornton almost pitches out of it with a K of Vergason, but is undone by his defense. Chaz Frank drops a third-out fly ball by Pankake, two runs score. Gamecocks go up 3-2.

-- MWE
   209. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 11, 2013 at 01:50 PM (#4466897)
There's another error, this one by Westmoreland of South Carolina. Fourth error of game.

-- MWE
   210. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 11, 2013 at 01:52 PM (#4466901)
Error doesn't cost Gamecocks. Through 5, South Carolina holds a 3-2 lead.

-- MWE
   211. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 11, 2013 at 01:57 PM (#4466906)
These two teams have committed 13 errors in three games so far.

-- MWE
   212. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 11, 2013 at 01:59 PM (#4466908)
South Carolina gets the first two runners on the 6th, tries to bunt them over but a good defensive play(!) by Cody Stubbs cuts down the lead runner at 3B.

-- MWE
   213. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 11, 2013 at 02:02 PM (#4466912)
Big K by Thornton of Kyle Martin, but Tanner English delivers with two outs for the second time in the game, RBI double.

-- MWE
   214. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 11, 2013 at 02:07 PM (#4466923)
Landon Lassiter with first hit for Heels off Westmoreland, leadoff single in the 6th.

-- MWE
   215. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 11, 2013 at 02:08 PM (#4466926)
Colin Moran follows with an RBI triple, UNC pulls within a run.

-- MWE
   216. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 11, 2013 at 02:13 PM (#4466935)
Fly ball to shallow center creates the tying run for the Tar Heels as Martin throws wildly to second trying to catch Skye Bolt, allowing Moran to come home (he wasn't tagging). Just not good defense by South Carolina.

-- MWE
   217. SoSH U at work Posted: June 11, 2013 at 02:17 PM (#4466941)
Sounds like I'm missing a terribly played game.
   218. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 11, 2013 at 02:18 PM (#4466942)
Walks to Holberton (intentional after 3-1 count) and Zolk (unintentional) load the bases and lead to Westmoreland's departure. Closer Tyler Webb comes in for the Gamecocks.

-- MWE
   219. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 11, 2013 at 02:22 PM (#4466949)
Bases-loaded walk to #9 hitter Parks Jordan after an 0-2 count, and Tar Heels take a 5-4 lead. Fundamental baseball has been, shall we say, lacking today for the Gamecocks.

-- MWE
   220. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 11, 2013 at 02:25 PM (#4466954)
This game could be 2-2, instead it's 5-4 North Carolina after 6.

-- MWE
   221. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 11, 2013 at 02:31 PM (#4466966)
Thornton completes the seventh, with just a walk to Dantzler marring the ledger. Stretch time at the Bosh.

-- MWE
   222. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 11, 2013 at 02:38 PM (#4466973)
Webb works through the heart of UNC's order in order. Going to the 8th. Chris McCue in for the Tar Heels.

-- MWE
   223. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 11, 2013 at 02:48 PM (#4466992)
McCue walks two but gets through the eighth. Would expect UNC to go to Kent Emanuel in the 9th.

-- MWE
   224. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 11, 2013 at 02:57 PM (#4467003)
Going to the 9th in Chapel Hill. North Carolina 5, South Carolina 4. McCue, somewhat surprisingly, is coming back out for the Tar Heels.

-- MWE
   225. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 11, 2013 at 03:01 PM (#4467011)
One-out walk to Pankake. Third BB off McCue, but he's apparently going to face Dantzler.

-- MWE

EDIT: Nope, Emanuel comes in.
   226. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 11, 2013 at 03:05 PM (#4467013)
One pitch, one out. Dantzler skies to left on the first pitch. One more out for the Heels to get.

-- MWE
   227. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 11, 2013 at 03:06 PM (#4467014)
And...one more pitch ends the game on force out at second. Heels win 5-4, on to Omaha to face their in-state rivals from Raleigh on Sunday afternoon.

Three seeds (1, 3, 4) make it to Omaha.

Fun note from Kendall Rogers on Twitter - the last College World Series played in which there was not a team from Florida or Texas that qualified was 1990.

ESPN Broadcast Schedule. On the deuce, mostly, until Wednesday, then on ESPN for most of the rest of the series. IU/Louisville will be on the Main Event Saturday night. Ravech and Kyle Peterson (who's been very good so far from what I've seen) doing the afternoon games, Patrick and Hershiser the evening matchups.

-- MWE
   230. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 15, 2013 at 03:59 PM (#4470139)
Under way in Omaha. Senior Kendall Graveman for Mississippi State, freshman Andrew Moore for Oregon State. The Beavers plated a pair in the first on Sam Frost's throwing error, a double by Michael Conforto, and a single by Danny Hayes, but the Bulldogs answered with a three-spot in the second on RBI singles by Frost and Demarcus Henderson and a fielding error by Dylan Davis in right. Top of the third.

-- MWE
   231. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 15, 2013 at 04:20 PM (#4470146)
Oregon State ties the score in the 4th. Danny Hayes leadoff walk, one-out triple by Kavin Keyes.

I haven't seen any of this year's games yet, but I like Peterson a lot.
   233. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 15, 2013 at 04:40 PM (#4470173)
Moore wiggles out of trouble in the fifth, getting Hunter Renfroe to fly out with two on and two out. Still tied at 3 after 4 1/2.

-- MWE
   234. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 15, 2013 at 04:42 PM (#4470176)
Miss State catches a break. One-out single by Andy Peterson, then Conforto follows with a bomb to center that bounces over the wall for a book-rule double. Peterson would have scored easily.

-- MWE
   235. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 15, 2013 at 04:44 PM (#4470178)
Dylan Davis GB4 plates the go-ahead run for the Beavers. Conforto moves up.

Hook for Graveman, sophomore lefty Ross Mitchell in to pitch to lefty-swinging Hayes.

-- MWE
   237. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 15, 2013 at 04:50 PM (#4470186)
Mitchell gets Hayes swinging on a 3-2 pitch. OSU up 4-3 after 5 but it could have been worse.

-- MWE
   238. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 15, 2013 at 05:10 PM (#4470202)
Moore gets his first two strikeouts of the game in the seventh. He's just over 90 pitches and seems to be getting stronger.

-- MWE
   239. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 15, 2013 at 05:22 PM (#4470212)
Mississippi State just can't seem to figure a way to get Michael Conforto out. 4-4 today. Fortunately, they have kept OSU's Dylan Davis under control. Through 7 Beavers maintain a slim 4-3 lead.

-- MWE
   240. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 15, 2013 at 07:25 PM (#4470290)
Nice comeback by Mississippi State, with Wes Rea delivering a two-run double in the 8th to put the Bulldogs ahead and Jonathan Holder retiring Danny Hayes on a fly ball to the warning track in right with two runners on to nail down a 5-4 win.

sigh...
   242. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 16, 2013 at 12:31 PM (#4470475)
Indiana became the first Big 10 team in 30 years to win a College World Series game as junior lefty Joey DeNato threw a four-hit shutout to defeat Louisville 2-0. The Hoosiers got two early runs off Louisville ace Chad Green, who lasted just 2+ innings, and DeNato made them stand up. Indiana and Mississippi State will play at 8 PM Monday while the Cardinals face Oregon State in an elimination game at 3.

Great pitching matchups today: Carlos Rodon against Kent Emanuel in the early game, Adam Plutko vs Aaron Nola in the nightcap. Both games on the Deuce.

-- MWE
   243. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 16, 2013 at 03:55 PM (#4470581)
NC State scores in the top of the first. Trea Turner walk and steal, RBI single by Tarran Senay. Rodon with a walk and 4 Ks through 2.

-- MWE
   244. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 16, 2013 at 03:59 PM (#4470584)
Emanuel at 50 pitches already in the third.

-- MWE
   245. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 16, 2013 at 04:06 PM (#4470589)
NC State jumping on Emanuel in the third. Double by Brett Austin, RBI single by Grant Clyde, RBI double by Brett Williams, RBI single by Bryan Adametz. 4 runs for Rodon, long way back for the Heels. Chris McCue comes in for Emanuel. Has not been a good postseason for the UNC ace.

-- MWE
   246. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 16, 2013 at 04:15 PM (#4470598)
McCue can't stem the tide, walking Jake Armstrong and giving up an RBI single to #9 hitter Logan Ratledge. NC State takes 5-0 lead after 2 1/2.

-- MWE
   247. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 16, 2013 at 05:18 PM (#4470623)
Into the seventh. Rodon has allowed one hit, two walks, 8 K through 6 1/3.

-- MWE

EDIT: Make that two hits. UNC with their first real threat, two on, one out.
   248. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 16, 2013 at 05:19 PM (#4470624)
And just like that, Rodon gets out of it on a 5-3 GDP. 5-0 NC State through 7.

-- MWE
   249. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 17, 2013 at 09:31 AM (#4470938)
NC State beats UNC 8-1. Rodon goes the distance with a shutout into the ninth, UNC uses eight pitchers.

UCLA upsets LSU 2-1. Adam Plutko outduels previously undefeated Aaron Nola, who was let down by his defense, as both Bruins runs were unearned. LSU 1B Mason Katz homered for the Tigers' only run. UCLA closer David Berg picked up his 22nd save of the season.

So all four first-round games were won by the visiting team (AKA the lower-seeded team). Today's games have Oregon State (LHP Ben Wetzler) facing Louisville (RHP Jeff Thompson) in an elimination contest at 3, and Indiana playing Mississippi State (neither team has announced a starter yet) in a winners' bracket contest at 8.

-- MWE
   250. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 17, 2013 at 11:50 AM (#4471044)
Rodon, by my count, threw 108 pitches in his complete game.

-- MWE
   251. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 17, 2013 at 02:26 PM (#4471204)
Per Aaron Fitt, UNC will pull closer Tyler Thornton out of the pen to start against LSU's Cody Glenn in Tuesday's elimination. Glenn was suspended by Paul Manieri for the regional for violating team rules, and was reinstated for the super regional but didn't pitch in LSU's sweep of Oklahoma, so he should be well-rested.

-- MWE
   252. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 17, 2013 at 03:02 PM (#4471231)
Taking a wild guess on the starters for tonight's 8 PM game: Ben Bracewell for Mississippi State, Aaron Slegers for Indiana. We'll see how wrong I can be :)

-- MWE
   253. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 17, 2013 at 03:18 PM (#4471245)
Louisville gets a one-out single from Cole Sturgeon in the top of the first, but nothing else as Sturgeon is picked off to end the inning. Another example of overly aggressive baserunning.

-- MWE
   254. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 17, 2013 at 03:30 PM (#4471250)
Oregon State gets a leadoff single from Tyler Smith, but he's left stranded at second.

-- MWE
   255. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 17, 2013 at 03:59 PM (#4471266)
Oregon State scores first, bottom of the 3rd. #9 hitter Max Gordon HBP, followed by a Smith double. Beavers still batting.

-- MWE
   256. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 17, 2013 at 04:06 PM (#4471269)
Bunt single by Andy Peterson is followed by a walk to Michael Conforto on a 3-2 pitch. Bases loaded, no outs, OSU has cleanup hitter Dylan Davis at plate with a chance to break it open early.

-- MWE
   257. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 17, 2013 at 04:07 PM (#4471270)
Davis FB7, too shallow to score anyone.

-- MWE
   258. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 17, 2013 at 04:12 PM (#4471272)
Ouch. Throwing error by Cardinals' 2B Zach Lucas on potential inning-ending DP grounder by Danny Hayes plates two runs for OSU.

-- MWE
   259. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 17, 2013 at 04:17 PM (#4471279)
Thompson escapes with no further damage. 3-0 Beavers after 3.

It should be noted that Louisville is without senior 2B Nick Ratajczak (shoulder injury). He was hurt in the first game of the super regional against Vanderbilt and hasn't played since.

-- MWE
   260. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 17, 2013 at 04:21 PM (#4471286)
I should also note that Louisville catcher Kyle Gibson dropped a foul popup by Conforto immediately prior to the base on balls.

-- MWE
   261. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 17, 2013 at 04:25 PM (#4471289)
Louisville's had a couple of baserunners in four innings but hasn't been able to move them along against Wetzler.

-- MWE
   262. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 17, 2013 at 04:42 PM (#4471310)
OSU pounces for two more in the fourth on singles by Gordon, Peterson, Conforto, and Davis, knocking Thompson from the game. Lefty Cody Ege, who's been asked for a lot in the offseason after being a lefty specialist most of the year, comes on to try to stem the tide.

-- MWE
   263. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 17, 2013 at 04:46 PM (#4471314)
That might be the killer. After a walk to Hayes loads the bases, Louisville shortstop Sutton Whiting throws the third out away, as two more runs score.

-- MWE
   264. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 17, 2013 at 05:13 PM (#4471341)
Now 10-1 Beavers midway through.

-- MWE
   265. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 18, 2013 at 08:46 AM (#4471707)
Oregon State eliminates Louisville 11-4.

For the second game in a row, Mississippi State came back in the late innings, this time to defeat Indiana 5-4 and take control of Bracket 1. The Bulldogs trailed 3-2 starting the eighth but got singles from Brett Pirtle, Wes Rea, and DeMarcus Henderson to tie the score with one out. After a groundout advanced the runners, pinch-hitter Trey Porter delivered a two-run single to put MSU ahead 5-3, and closer Jonathan Holder got the last out with the tying run on third in the 9th. The Hoosiers and Beavers play Wednesday needing a win and then two consecutive victories over the Bulldogs to move to the CWS final.

(Side note: I did get both starters wrong. MSU started Trevor Fitts, who lasted just 2 1/3 innings; IU started Will Coursen-Carr, who made it into the sixth.)

UNC (Tyler Thornton) vs LSU (Cody Glenn) at 3 in an elimination game; UCLA (Nick Vander Tuig) vs NC State (undecided) at 8 in the Bracket 2 winners' final.

-- MWE
   266. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 18, 2013 at 09:00 PM (#4472395)
UNC eliminates LSU - my pick to win the tournament, of course - 4-2. Brian Holberton, who has come up big in the postseason for the Tar Heels, hit a two-run homer off Cody Glenn in the first, and Trent Thornton gutted out seven innings of two-run ball despite allowing nine hits and four walks before turning the ball over to Chris McCue for the save.

UCLA and NC State are scoreless in the bottom of the third. The Wolfpack put sophomore righty Logan Jernigan out against Bruins' junior Nick Vander Tuig, and so far at least Jernigan's holding his own. Jernigan's issues this year have revolved around command, and he's thrown 48 pitches already, so he's likely on a short leash.

-- MWE
   267. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 18, 2013 at 09:09 PM (#4472404)
Pack on the board but aggressive baserunning kills again. Bryan Adametz HBP, Jake Armstrong single, Logan Ratledge SH, Trea Turner single to score one, but Armstrong tries to advance when Brenton Allen airmails the plate on his throw only to have Shane Zeile make a quick recovery and throw to Vander Tuig covering to nail him.

-- MWE
   268. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 18, 2013 at 09:15 PM (#4472407)
Quick fourth for Jernigan, on just eight pitches.

-- MWE
   269. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 18, 2013 at 09:25 PM (#4472416)
Vander Tuig with two Ks and a popup against the middle of the Wolfpack order. Through 4, 1-0 NC State.

-- MWE
   270. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 19, 2013 at 12:42 PM (#4473049)
UCLA got two runs in the fifth off Jernigan: walk, single, walk to load the bases, and then a single by Kevin Kramer off reliever Grant Sasser plated the tying run and a wild pitch scored the go-ahead run. Vander Tuig and ace closer David Berg (save 23) made the runs stand up, and for the second straight game the Bruins won a 2-1 game to drop NC State to the losers' bracket where UNC is waiting yet again.

Today's game has Oregon State facing Indiana in an elimination contest; the loser goes home, the winner has to beat Mississippi State twice in order to advance. Since the NCAA went to this format in 2003, only the Beavers (in 2006) and South Carolina (in 2010) have come through to win the CWS after dropping their first game.

-- MWE
   271. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 19, 2013 at 12:48 PM (#4473055)
Tar Heels plan to use lefty Hobbs Johnson against NC State. Wolfpack hasn't announced a starter, there's at least some thought being given to bringing back Carlos Rodon on three days' rest.

-- MWE
   272. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 19, 2013 at 09:26 PM (#4473575)
Senior lefty Matt Boyd is pitching a gem for Oregon State against Indiana. Through four innings he's walked two batters, picked both of them off, fanned seven, allowed no hits, and has a 1-0 lead. The Beavers are facing the 6'10" sophomore righty Aaron Slegers (a Twins draft pick this year), and he's been in and out of trouble but so far has allowed only one run.

-- MWE
   273. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 19, 2013 at 09:42 PM (#4473593)
Indiana breaks up the no-hitter on singles by Michael Basil and Dustin DeMuth in the fifth.

NC State's going to start Brad Stone against UNC, holding back Rodon. I think that's a good decision.

-- MWE
   274. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 19, 2013 at 09:49 PM (#4473605)
Boyd pitches out of the fifth, into the sixth now with both Slegers and Boyd strong.

-- MWE
   275. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 20, 2013 at 02:05 PM (#4474131)
That one run was all she wrote for the ballgame. OSU eliminates Indiana 1-0. Four-hitter for Boyd, with 11 Ks. Beavers play Mississippi State tomorrow at 3, trying to repeat their 2006 run through the losers' bracket.

UNC/NC State at 8 tonight.

So in the first round of double elimination, teams were playing as many as five games in four days, but for the CWS double elimination round, teams have off days in between all their games. Very asymmetrical.

I thought it was a distinct possibility, but hadn't worked out the math on how long it would be between now and a potential national championship game.
It's his bullpen day - is he just going a few innings?
   280. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 20, 2013 at 08:24 PM (#4474400)
No idea, but I'd be surprised if Avent takes him out as long as the game is close. He'll have three days rest Monday when the final starts, if the Wolfpack makes it, so I'm sure he can go in any one of those games.

I think what this does is improve their chances of winning this game and reduces their chances of making it to Monday. I get what Avent is doing, though; UCLA has nowhere near the offensive depth that UNC does.

Rodon's at 35 pitches through 2 innings. I saw a tweet that says he's expected to throw about 80; we'll see.

Hobbs Johnson is matching Rodon, scoreless through 2.

Big K by Rodon of Chaz Frank after a leadoff bunt single/throwing error by Mike Zolk, followed by a sac, gets a runner to third with one out.

UNC gets the first two runners on in the fourth. Only in college ball does your cleanup hitter bunt.

Walk to Stubbs loads them up. Big hole for Rodon to try to dig out of.

Heels get one on a sacrifice fly. Rodon guts it out.

Rodon managed to get through five innings, leaving down 2-0. The Tar Heels blew it open with four in the eighth and sent the Wolfpack home with a 7-0 victory. Their reward is to face UCLA, needing two wins to advance. The possibility of a rematch of the 2006 and 2007 finals is still alive, although both UNC and Oregon State needs wins today and tomorrow to get there.

Mississippi State vs Oregon State at 3, UCLA vs UNC at 8.

Pitching matchups: MSU's Kendall Graveman vs OSU's Andrew Moore, UCLA's Grant Watson vs UNC's Kent Emanuel.

EDIT: North Carolina has not faced a right-handed starter since the regionals.

21 pitches combined for Graveman and Moore in the first. Six up, six down.

Lather, rinse, repeat: 25 pitches in the second, six up, six down. No Ks for either starter though.

One-out double by Jake Rodriguez in the third, but Max Gordon lines into a 3-6 DP. Great play by MSU's Wes Rea, who is having a monster CWS.

MSU with the first scoring threat of the game, leadoff single by Trey Porter, sac, two-out error by Tyler Smith, but Moore gets out with no damage.

Darn I thought that was going to be a double. Just a half second too much hang time.

First run might very well win this game, too.

Bulldogs on the board in the fourth with Wes Rea right in the middle of it again. Pirtle single, Rea double, Bradford single. Runners on the corners and one out.

Umpire bailed out OSU from being a bad inning but there was still that run. Also, Moore needs to cover first base on grounders like the previous one.
   298. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 21, 2013 at 04:10 PM (#4475323)
Once again, a CWS team runs into an out on the bases as OSU's Michael Conforto cuts down Rea trying to score on a short fly ball to left. There have been a *lot* of those.

-- MWE

EDIT: On replay, it looks as though Rea might have beaten the rap at the plate. You make the call.

Danny Hayes with a leadoff single for the Beavers in the fifth, immediately erased on a DP. At the midway point.

Moore has nothing left. This is ugly.
