NCAA, MLB in talks for partnership to help college baseball

The NCAA and Major League Baseball are in active discussions to develop a broad partnership that could result in a boom to the game at the collegiate level, according to a report obtained by CBSSports.com.

The partnership is aimed at expanding the importance of college baseball and is expected to result a significant investment by MLB that could include funding scholarships across the sport. The NCAA Board of Directors was briefed on the matter last week at their annual meeting.

“It’s very early,” a source said. “But we’re hopeful something meaningful will come out of the talks.”

Baseball is currently an equivalency sport at the collegiate level, with schools allotted 11.7 full scholarships to distribute how they see fit. This results in players receiving a wide range of scholarship money to attend school, from nothing to a select few getting a full scholarship depending on how the coach recruits. What form an MLB sponsorship will take is yet to be determined but it could result in a general scholarship fund or additional scholarships for each school paid by the league.

Also will be working on increasing diversity in the D1 ranks, timing the CWS and the draft, and having colleges use wood bats.

This seems like a good idea all around. It will generate positive publicity and, if they switch to wooden bats, better prepare those players who move on to minor league ball.

I'm not sure how the scholarships will fit in with Title IX though. If MLB wants colleges to give out more baseball scholarships to men the universities are going to have to add more scholarships for women's sports to keep things "equal".

Just add them to softball to balance it out. This could turn out to be a great thing for college baseball.

You know what would help college baseball. If they added more scholarships.

Or you could drive a stake through it's heart, and have everyone intent on a pro baseball career do so after high school.

How about taking 10 of the 85 scholarships away from football and giving them to baseball? Do college football teams really need 85 players on scholarship (plus walk-ons)?

Finally. I can't get over the metal bats. That ping sound is not an easy adjustment.

Considering how a few teams, mostly from the SEC West, game the system so that they have something like 120 scholarship players to choose from, apparently they need more.

Some very interesting Super Regionals this weekend. Stony Brook, yes, Stony Brook is in the CWS. Their bats lived up to it and beat up LSU 7-2. Kent State has Oregon on the ropes in game 2, already up 1 game to zero.

The North rules!

Oregon is way north of Kent State.
