What (CoB) said. I can't believe Boone could be that brain dead.
   102. Meatwad Posted: July 23, 2018 at 10:39 PM (#5714624)
Caritini in to pitch
   103. Zonk is Just the Right Amount of Wrought Posted: July 23, 2018 at 10:39 PM (#5714625)
Caratini in for the save...
   104. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: July 23, 2018 at 10:39 PM (#5714626)
Apparently Caratini still has some life in his arm.
   105. Meatwad Posted: July 23, 2018 at 10:40 PM (#5714627)
1 pitch 1 out.
   106. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: July 23, 2018 at 10:41 PM (#5714628)
I'm worried that one of these position players pitching might seriously injure Morrow.
   107. Bote Man Posted: July 23, 2018 at 10:41 PM (#5714629)
Why carry a 16-man bullpen when so many position players can pitch so much better??
   108. Chip Posted: July 23, 2018 at 10:48 PM (#5714632)
And Sanchez's groin is clearly not even CLOSE to being fully healed.

I assume he’s under orders not to bust it to first, or on plays in the field. Thus the 2-base passed ball which proved to be the winning run.

The confrontation with Severino after the inning must have been over the crossup which led to the passed ball.
   109. Howie Menckel Posted: July 23, 2018 at 10:50 PM (#5714633)
Yankees down 7-6, 1st and 2nd, no one out in the 9th

No 3 hitter Didi (he does not have a last name in NY media, like Madonna) makes a terrible sac bunt try and then makes an awkward but successful one.

2nd and 3rd, 1 out. as others have noted, Stanton - on a 9 for 9 streak in Tampa but more importantly he's Stanton - of course gets IBBd. to their credit, the Yankees announcers saw this coming. did Boone?

that brings up Hicks - 3 for his last 29. make it 3 for 30 as he grounds into a forceout at the plate.

now .189-hitting Sanchez, who hits a meek grounder to 2nd. I've never seen this before, but the Rays are unable to get Hicks on a toss to second base - but they throw on to 1st and get a sleeping Sanchez to end the game (this after a 2-base, run-scoring PB led to Severino and Sanchez exchanging dugout pleasantries earlier).

even the Yankee propaganda announcers called it "inexcusable."
I assume there will be a re-education seminar before tomorrow's game.
   110. Zonk is Just the Right Amount of Wrought Posted: July 23, 2018 at 10:52 PM (#5714635)
Joe making a mistake here by not going to the lefty Rizzo against Peralta.
   111. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: July 23, 2018 at 10:53 PM (#5714636)
Jesus, Joe has to make a pitching change with two outs in the 9th to go to the lefty. Managering!!
   112. Zonk is Just the Right Amount of Wrought Posted: July 23, 2018 at 10:53 PM (#5714637)
OK, so never mind...

And...

OK...

Here comes rizzo to the mound.

That re-education seminar should start with Boone. Christ, he then had Hicks bluffing a bunt on the next pitch.

et a sleeping Sanchez to end the game

See #108 and my previous comments. His groin is very clearly not 100% and the Yankees are terrified he's going to re-injure it. He hasn't run hard in a single at bat since he's come back. Hell, he banged a ball off the LF wall earlier in the game and jogged to 1st. He's not dogging it, he's protecting it.

My beef is that if he's still at that point, he shouldn't really be out there.
   116. Zonk is Just the Right Amount of Wrought Posted: July 23, 2018 at 10:55 PM (#5714641)
Rizzo's arsenal includes an eephus pitch.
   117. Meatwad Posted: July 23, 2018 at 10:56 PM (#5714642)
Gets the out! At least this blow out had some entertainment.
   118. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: July 23, 2018 at 10:58 PM (#5714643)
Reports of Kole Calhoun's death may have been premature.
   119. Howie Menckel Posted: July 23, 2018 at 11:09 PM (#5714647)
He's not dogging it, he's protecting it.

you may be right about Sanchez, I don't know.
but in the same game, his SP calls him out in the dugout and the announcers don't buy that angle.

then again, Romine in the past month has resumed being terrible at hitting
   120. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: July 23, 2018 at 11:13 PM (#5714649)
Ohtani just hit a homer that achieved low earth orbit.
   121. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: July 23, 2018 at 11:14 PM (#5714650)
The Cubs position players really need to pick it up. Ryan Rua just struck out a batter with a 76 MPH changeup after a 91 MPH fastball.
   122. Zonk is Just the Right Amount of Wrought Posted: July 23, 2018 at 11:17 PM (#5714651)
That was probably as unclose as a 7-1 game can possibly be.

@ColeyHarvey

Aaron Boone said three times he needed to see video of Gary Sánchez's running (after the passed ball, down the 1B line) in order to see what his effort was on those plays. But, he added, Sánchez is healthy. "He should be able to get after it."

I assume he’s under orders not to bust it to first, or on plays in the field. Thus the 2-base passed ball which proved to be the winning run.

That seems to be a matter of dispute:

Not sure if Sanchez was dogging it, or just trying to be careful and miscalculated how much margin he had on those plays, but you can't really play MLB at half-speed. Improvement needed here.

EDIT: No coke for Howie, I made the effort to properly format, and added commentary.
   125. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: July 23, 2018 at 11:50 PM (#5714659)
Well, if that's the case, maybe they should have pulled him aside sometime before that at bat, because he's been noticeably jogging down to first on every ball he's hit since he came off the DL.

The Red Sox have a 6-game lead in the AL East for the 1st time since the end of the 2013 season, when they won the AL East by 6 games and went on to win the World Series.

They are 40 games over .500 for the first time since September 30, 1949.

.............

if the Red Sox cool off and finish 35-25, that's still 106-56
the Yankees would have to improve their current hot pace to finish 43-21 to tie them (10 games left, but 7 are in Fenway)

interesting condundrum for GM Cashman
if they make a bold move and still lose the wild card game.........
   127. Bote Man Posted: July 24, 2018 at 12:14 AM (#5714665)
Can they just have a Yankees-Red Sox World Series and be done with it???
   128. Howie Menckel Posted: July 24, 2018 at 12:51 AM (#5714670)
there was a suggestion today of a Yankees-Red Sox tie for first.

1-game playoff - winner gets the division and the mini-bye, loser gets tossed into the 1-game "loser's bracket" and risks going home

wow, Sanchez getting crucified in the NY press - and now this real tweet:

Meanwhile Stanton's gone 9 for 9 with a pair of walks in his last 2 games at the Trop, and without a Yankees win to show for it.

Yes, I rescind 108 having now seen both Boone and the Yankee twitter account throw Sanchez under the bus [Unintentionally perhaps on the latter, but the effect is the same.]
