HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!

Batter reaches on a strikeout/wild pitch.
Batter reaches on an infield dribbler.
Both runners advance on an error.
Double, both runners score.

Just another Trevor Cahill start.

11 freakin homers for Tommy LaStella. More than Mike Trout and Miguel Cabrera combined!!!

Trevor Cahill's the worst. I can't believe actual smart people thought he was going to be good. I'm a stupid moron, and I knew he was gonna suck.

The biggest regret of the Yankees offseason won't be not signing Harper or Machado, it will be choosing Happ over Patrick Corbin.

Maybe for a year or two, but in 3 years, we'll be thrilled.

Meh. More Happ-lessness.

Palmer guessed the over/under home run total today at four. It only took three and a half innings to beat the over.

I am enjoying the Gleyber day.

"Maybe for a year or two, but in 3 years, we'll be thrilled."

You can make the case it was a good decision not to sign Corbin, but signing a 36-year old pitcher to a multi-year deal was ... puzzling.
   19. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: May 15, 2019 at 04:12 PM (#5842467)
FTR, that was 7 home runs in less than an hour. No idea whether or not that's a record, but it's gotta be close.
   20. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: May 15, 2019 at 04:15 PM (#5842470)
Maybe Happ's going for the Jack Morris Award rather than the ERA title.

So Edwin Jackson is making his first appearance as a Blue Jay today.

Zack's looking more and more like the old Zach. That sinker of his is just plain unhittable when he's on, and he was on today.

Seriously? A two-year deal for a guy who has averaged 172 IP, 3.48 ERA, 121 ERA= the last four years was puzzling?

Relax. Happ will be fine.

Edwin Jackson has allowed a home run for 14 different MLB teams.

Christopher Kamka @ckamka 1h1 hour ago

Edwin Jackson has faced Andrew McCutchen while pitching for eight different teams.

I'm not sure why he used that one, since he's not facing Cutch today. Regardless...

The Angels out-hit the Twins 44-24 during this series and lost two out of three. The Twins walked one additional time during the series. I think the Angels went something like 4 - 926* with runners in scoring position.

*Number is an estimate based on how many times I yelled "Come on, guys!" the last three days.

I don't know if it's the new hitting coaches, but I love the Angels' new approach - wait for a good pitch and make contact. It's led to the lowest strikeout rate in the league, by far, without sacrificing patience (they're above average in walk rate). However, they're dead last in the league in BABIP, which suggests that they're sacrificing hard contact for contact. According to Fangraphs, they're middle of the pack in hard hit % and above average in soft hit %, so it's not immediately clear that's the problem. I'm hoping it's bad luck that will even out and their batting average with RISP will rise from its current .237. I know that they'll ground into more than their fair share of DPs, but you figure the approach will pay off at some point and lead to more runs (they're currently just above average).

Edwin Jackson has spent 17 seasons in the majors. He's won 100 games, was an All-Star, he lived all over the US (and now Canada), and has made about $80M for his career. If you count the minor leagues, he's had 27 different stops, including 2 stops at AAA in Las Vegas with 2 different parent clubs (Dodgers early in his career, Oakland this year). All this in spite of being a decidedly below average (and often below replacement, and with the Cubs far below replacement) pitcher for most of his career.

He might be my hero.

ETA: And he's still only 35 years old. He might kick around to 5-6 more teams before he turns 40.

Game times for that Yanks - O's doubleheader - 2:12 and 2:30. Gotta be the fastest doubleheader since the 70's, not that there've been many.

I'm trying to decide how much I want to hold that HR against CJ. He's been fine otherwise since he got called back up, but on the other hand, he hasn't really felt like his old dominant self, either.

It's been awhile, but back in 2006 the Yanks and the Red Sox played a doubleheader where both games lasted just 9 innings. The first game took 3:55, and the second game took 4:48. Ponson and Lester started that second game, and they each put up Game Scores of 18.

Sure, Joe, burn a LOOGY and then let Brad Brach bat to lead off the 10th.

Yeah, there isn't necessarily one person to blame here. You've got a nice outing from Darvish, but he throws so many damn pitches that the pen has to get in there early. Then you've got pretty much everyone who came in after except Montgomery contributing to the Reds' eventual win.
   52. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: May 15, 2019 at 10:26 PM (#5842601)
So who got a luckier break on that play, the Sox or the Rox?
   53. Brian C Posted: May 15, 2019 at 11:02 PM (#5842623)

And even Monty gave up 2 hits in 0.2 IP, so it's not like he was super sharp either.

Really the pen was going great guns until Edwards showed back up, and then suddenly everyone got shaky again. Obviously I think that's almost certainly probably coincidence, but it's weird how clean the correlation is here.

   56. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 16, 2019 at 12:26 AM (#5842637)
Dave Roberts is the epitome of the worst in managering circa 2019. He just took Maeda out immediately after his 12th strikeout of the night. Maeda has pitched 6 2/3 shutout innings, given up 3 hits, and was at about 85 pitches. But, you see, Kenta Maeda is not left-handed, and the next batter is. This Roberts cannot abide. Dodgers fans boo him lustily on his way to the mound.
   57. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 16, 2019 at 12:43 AM (#5842638)
Roberts then leaves the lefty, Alexander, in to face right-handed Ty France leading off the eighth. Alexander gets France to ground to first, but drops the throw as he is trying to cover the bag. France reaches on the error, prompting Roberts to bring in right-handed Pedro Baez because...why, exactly?
