New Bob Uecker statue far from Miller Park’s front row

Executives from MillerCoors were on hand as well as a few generations of the Uecker family. To some of those family members, Uecker had a special thanks.

“Thank you very much for finally admitting I’m your father,” he said.

Uecker's top comp is Doug Camilli; I read that and thought, "Wow, Camilli was a pretty good player for the Dodgers, wasn't he?" No, that was Dolph Camilli, this is his son. Actually, Camilli fils and Ueck and practically statistical twins...

Great honor for a great guy and a darn good play-by-play man with a droll sense of humor. No wonder he's so beloved in Wisconsin.

Which one's Ueck and which one's the statue?
   4. Publius Publicola Posted: April 26, 2014 at 10:27 AM (#4694685)
If Uecker did not exist, it would be necessary to create him.

It's basically impossible not to love Uecker, even though he's getting up there in years.

This really is a wonderful and appropriate tribute--the statue is in the last row of the upper deck, obstructed by a column. Perfect.

"Great seats, hey Buddy?!"

And of course this is the one commercial from that series that is no longer available on YouTube, because why would Miller want free advertising???

There are several Miller Lite commercials on YouTube featuring Uecker. I'm a bit too young to have seen the "Great Seats" one on TV, but I think this is the one.

EDIT: Coke to Morty. I should have refreshed.

That's the one, but you'd better download it ASAP before the YouTube police remove it again. I could swear that I saw it last Summer, but it was gone this past Winter.

When you live in the cloud you're always getting rained on.

The other statue is just a bit outside... of the stadium

For the record, Rodney Dangerfield stole the case of Miller Lite.

He's always been hysterical when I heard him on the radio.

Put it in the front row!

For a moment, I felt a little weird about them building a statue as a reference to an old beer commercial. But what the heck, it's a really good beer commercial. And if Miller Park can't reference a Miller Lite ad, who can?

bob uecker became (or always was) a crazy uncle in the attic, but he is OUR crazy uncle in the attic and we LOVE him!

What's amazing is that Uecker seemingly hasn't aged a day since he was a youngster in the Cards organization. Of course, he looked 40 as a 22 year old.

#17, poor Uecker. That card has him batting LH.

#15: The Brewers sell their obstructed seats before game time for $1, and they call them "Uecker Seats", so this commercial has long been referenced around the ballpark.

They built a brand new ballpark to modern specifications and still wound up with obstructed-view seats?? You're kidding, right?

Was that an oversight, like forgetting the bullpens in San Francisco? (Come to think of it, the foresight of the ballpark designers must have been obstructed.)

There will always be obstructions (support columns and the like), the choice is whether to put seats behind them or not.

Why not add the seats?

I went to see Eddie Murray get inducted into the HOF in 2003, but Uecker's speech was the highlight of that day. Best standup act I've seen in a while.
   24. Lance Posted: April 27, 2014 at 05:49 PM (#4695441)
Vcar, I have the same story, except I was there in 2003 to see Gary Carter go in. Uecker stole the show.

Does Bob Uecker give a speech at every HOF ceremony? How did he finagle that?
   26. SoSHially Unacceptable Posted: April 27, 2014 at 06:09 PM (#4695457)
He won the Frick that year, back when the Frick/Spink award winners shared the podium with the enshrinees.

   27. Crispix reaches boiling point with lackluster play Posted: April 27, 2014 at 06:19 PM (#4695465)
Oh, OK. I didn't notice that both anecdotes were about 2003.
   28. Moeball Posted: April 28, 2014 at 12:49 PM (#4695873)
I love the story Uecker tells about being Joe Torre's backup at catcher with the Braves back in the late '60s when Phil Niekro's career was taking off. For all of Uecker's self-deprecating comments about his hitting, he was considered a very good defensive catcher and Torre was having nightmares struggling to catch Niekro's knuckler.

So, as Bob tells the story, he became Niekro's main catcher, primarily because the Braves had a "chicken catcher Torre". (Ooh, bad pun there, Bob!)
   29. Bote Man Posted: April 28, 2014 at 02:39 PM (#4695972)
Well, Uecker always said catching a knuckleballer was easy. Just wait for it to quit rolling around and pick it up. Easy!
