New Cubs pitching coach old-school

Welcome to The Bosio Super Wednesday Show!

Yes, Bosio and his pitchers will rely on advance scouts and some computer printouts for tendencies, but, he says, the strategy “is going to be more focused on how do we get them out. Let’s not worry about (what batters hit) on certain counts.

“Don’t write me a book,” he said at the Cubs Convention. “If you want to write a book, stick it in the mail and give it to someone who cares. Just give me some good information on how I can get this guy out. That’s probably in a nutshell what we’re trying to do.”

Then he is a believer in using certain pitches to get batters out?

“Either that or throw at his (helmet) ear hole,” Bosio said with a laugh. “We’re going to do our share of that. I’m an old-school guy. … There’s a way to do it and do it the right way. I know we’re on the same page, Theo and the coaching staff. It’s not rocket science, it’s just old-school baseball.”

...When he talks about “inside,” Bosio will be referring to location he wants pitchers to throw, not on some bit of inside information gleaned from a computer.

“We’re going to (do) our share inside,” he said. “We’re going to play a good, hard old-fashioned baseball with fundamental stuff. And try to minimize our walks and mistakes. If we do that, we’ll win our share of games.”

I think if the title of this thread had been "Quick, name the pitching coach for the Chicago Cubs" nobody would have been able to pull it off without either googling it or thinking about it for quite awhile.

Nah, I knew who it was.

I don't know what kind of pitching coach Bosio's going to be, but I'll surprised if he's worse than his predecessor. Rothschild's departure after 2010 hurt the Cubs' staff more than people thought it would, I think.

I have to agree. I never thought much of Rothschild, but 2011 showed he had at least some value. Even if we assume a large amount of bad luck, there is still a sizable gape between that and what we would have expected with Rothschild.

I think the Yankees have to be pleased with the work Rothschild has done with their staff, it's been a good long while since that team had a pitching coach of his caliber.

I'm pretty sure I identified it as a risk area. I thought he was very good and was annoyed Hendry let him walk away. I recall offering the man a substantial raise. :-)

On Bosio ... I don't have a clue but I hope he actually has a pitching philosophy a bit more detailed and useful than "get this guy out."

And, no, I could not have named him. I can't remember who it was last year either.

I'm not 100% sure they had one.

Mark Riggins was the nominal pitching coach, but as noted, he was pretty forgettable.

I knew it was Bosio, but I remember him when he was still pitching, so it's not like he's some unknown guy for me.

He sounds a bit of a moron, though. He mentions Epstein, but it's hard to imagine their having a happy conversation if Bosio had thrown out some of the bits that appear in this interview.

This "get this guy out" philosophy may revolutionize pitching.

I'm not going to pick apart his comments here, because there's no reason to think that they represent the sum of his pitching philosophy. He's talking (to fans?) at the Cubs Convention, for crying out loud, not giving a seminar.

On the other hand, while I don't think that Rothschild was a bad coach or anything, I thought from time to time that the Cubs focused too much on strikeouts while he was here. Obviously strikeouts are good, but I can't count how many times I'd see Cubs pitchers get ahead in the count and then start nibbling. It would lead to a ton of Ks to be sure, but also more walks and higher pitch counts than I thought were necessary. So I think there's something to be said for "just get him out" as a guiding philosophy, not to mention the fact that the Cubs don't look to have a ton of high-K guys on their staff like they used to.

Tough to imagine that Theo heard the same things that the convention goers heard. I assume there was just as much of the 'throw one in his ear' as there was anything else but I bet he had something more polished, as well, for Theo.

Bosio seemed to have been particularly liked by his pitchers in the Brewers organization, even the ones at the major league level when he was interim pitching coach in 2009. (He got replaced by Rick Peterson. That really didn't work out.) I'd not worry about the supposed non-scientific approach; most of Bosio's previous work involves teaching minor league pitchers how to be pitchers and since that's what the Cubs have, he shouldn't be a problem.
