1. McCoy Posted: January 25, 2012 at 09:42 PM (#4045842)I don't know what kind of pitching coach Bosio's going to be, but I'll surprised if he's worse than his predecessor. Rothschild's departure after 2010 hurt the Cubs' staff more than people thought it would, I think.
I have to agree. I never thought much of Rothschild, but 2011 showed he had at least some value. Even if we assume a large amount of bad luck, there is still a sizable gape between that and what we would have expected with Rothschild.
I'm pretty sure I identified it as a risk area. I thought he was very good and was annoyed Hendry let him walk away. I recall offering the man a substantial raise. :-)
On Bosio ... I don't have a clue but I hope he actually has a pitching philosophy a bit more detailed and useful than "get this guy out."
And, no, I could not have named him. I can't remember who it was last year either.
I'm not 100% sure they had one.
On the other hand, while I don't think that Rothschild was a bad coach or anything, I thought from time to time that the Cubs focused too much on strikeouts while he was here. Obviously strikeouts are good, but I can't count how many times I'd see Cubs pitchers get ahead in the count and then start nibbling. It would lead to a ton of Ks to be sure, but also more walks and higher pitch counts than I thought were necessary. So I think there's something to be said for "just get him out" as a guiding philosophy, not to mention the fact that the Cubs don't look to have a ton of high-K guys on their staff like they used to.
