New York Daily News Online Sports Baseball Seaver Scout Burbrink Dies

Nelson Burbrink, who discovered Tom Seaver, passed away yesterday at the age of 79. I’m sorry to say that before reading this note, I’d never heard of Burbrink. That’s not too surprising, I guess. Not very much is known about scouts. I hope this situation changes. Scouts are the backbone of Major League Baseball and deserve more credit and recognition than they are currently getting.

Chris, here are a few more details on the Seaver story you mentioned. On February 24, 1966, the Braves signed Tom Seaver to a bonus contract worth $50,000. One week later, Commissioner Spike Eckert (The General) voided the contract, citing rules about signing amateur players during their current college season (which Seaver was still in the midst of). Then On April 3, Eckert held a lottery to determine which of three teams--the Indians, Mets, or Phillies?would win the right to negotiate with Seaver. Eckert picked the Mets' name out of the hat, giving them the first shot at signing "Tom Terrific." The rest is history...
