New York Magazine: Champs

Wondering who Jeremy Schaap, Chris Russo, Mike Lupica, Selena Roberts, and Will Leitch rank as the top ten New York athletes of the past 40 years are? Me neither.

Chris “Mad Dog” Russo

4. Derek Jeter
Never made a mistake in a big spot and had a number of signature plays. When he’s finished playing, I believe he’ll have 3,000 hits.

...

Mike Lupica

10. Derek Jeter
You can’t have a list like this and not have him on it. The Yankees of 1996 through 2000 were the old Knicks of baseball, and he was the face of them more than anybody. He isn’t as good as DiMaggio. But he has still been their DiMaggio.

...

Will Leitch

9. Derek Jeter
Can’t play defense and was probably never the best player on his team. But so what if anywhere else he’s a mere All-Star instead of a legend? No one said life was fair.

the beginning of the end

Maybe he was just listening to Nine Inch Nails or The Smashing Pumpkins.

God bless you. Trottier was the man, that team was incredible, and the NY media can go to hell for ignoriing them.

I know they're the Islanders, but you'd really think 4 Cups in a row, and a Final appearance the next year would get more than one 'journalist' to recognize them in this discussion. Also with the Devils, 3 Cups after '94, a 7 game loss to the Avs in 2001, and the guy that will likely hold every (or nearly every) goalie record on the team for that stretch, and he only gets one mention too. But that's okay, there's a bunch of tennis players on the lists.

Umm. How is this comment relevant again? Drafting Greg Kite signaled the beginning of the end.

The end of Auerbach's eye for talent.

Maryland's uniforms were red, white and yellow, JC.

Not only were, but are. You'll have to excuse me, but I'm confident that rr's right that had Bias been drafted by NY, or Philly, or LA, the last thing you'd be doing is talking about him as a "sure thing" "Jordan+2inches" player. Instead we'd probably be hearing about his drug abuse, his awful left hand, and how Sam Vincent would've schooled him.

Cosloy (is that the right name, Repoz?) has a take on Leitch's picks.

In any case, here's how the baseball players ranked:

Jackson
Seaver
Rivera
Jeter
Gooden
Strawberry
Torre
Piazza

I think that there's a bias towards peak here. Reggie! only played five years for the Yanks.
