New York Post: SCULLY’S VOICE STILL THE PERFECT TREAT

I KNOW I should have been watching the rest of the Rangers-Yankees, but . . . The MLB Network, yesterday, carried, live, the Dodgers-Rockies game, the Dodgers’ feed. With Vin Scully.

What a treat.

Scully has understood the difference between radio and TV since Jack Benny made the switch. On TV, his greatest gift is brevity. He knows exactly when it’s time to say nothing. And he rarely sees anything worth shouting about. He figures that we can see or we wouldn’t be watching.

In fact, in the first inning, yesterday, he noted that Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal is a switch hitter, adding, “batting right.” Then he added, as if to credit us and scold himself, “as you can see.”

Sixty years later, Scully never sounds bored or distracted. Or forced. No self-promotional nicknames, no pre-fab signature calls; he says nothing to place himself above the game or anything in it. And, because he works alone, he provides analysis, but no over-analysis. Still, his attention to detail, biographical info and what happened last night is complete.

Yesterday, when LA’s Matt Kemp hit a long homer, Scully correctly characterized it “a monster,” yet barely raised his voice. He doesn’t shout; he italicizes. Besides, he has no home run call beyond what comes naturally. Imagine that: Scully doesn’t rehearse what isn’t scripted.

If he were 21, today, fresh out of Fordham, looking for his first gig, a team or radio GM would quickly, easily remove him from consideration for everything that since, good gosh, 1950, so many have cherished.

It should be pointed out that, since the first three innings of Dodger games are simulcast on radio and TV, part of Scully's audience could not in fact see that Furcal was batting right-handed.

I'd have agreed with this last bit about Scully not having a chance today if I had not heard Dave Flemming with the Giants. I'm not saying he's of Scully's caliber, but he's never canned, he selects the relavent points a situation presents (not forcing in some lame tidbit he obviously decided at 3pm that he'd work in no matter what), he calls an automatic double "an automatic double" and when a fan interferes, he does not assume everyone's advancing 2 bases. As you might expect of one with a degree in classical languages, he does not engage in boys-at-the-bar hoo-ha in his call. He's something like 34, already in his 7th year and very good. I really think one day he might be great.

On Scully: I recently heard as part of the Giants' build up to a reunion of their '89 League Champs, Scully's calls for NBC of homers by Mitchell and Will Clark in that year's NLCS, and each was just masterful - it's hard to believe his work may deserve even higher esteem than I've heals for it all these years - because I already think of him as the best - but he just may deserve still more than my memory has been able to maintain.

I agree, Cuban X. Flemming really has a chance to be great.

I've been listening to Vin Scully since I was six years old...amidst everything else going on over that time span, good or bad, high or low, etc., he has always been a rock of journalistic integrity and good cheer, quietly adding something to every game he broadcasts without calling attention to himself. He helps you immerse yourself in the game, regardless of the point of view you bring to it. Occasionally, when he's a bit tired or distracted, he will lapse back into the Brooklynese which was his point of origin, and you will hear an inflection that sounds uncannily like a genteel version of Bugs Bunny--"it's the Dodgers, Doc!"

The only thing lacking in Dave Flemming, from what I can hear, is a similar quality of warmth that's so evident in Scully. Possibly he will grow/mature/age into it--Scully had less of this early in his career and it may be a "grandfather" effect. Jack Buck also took on that quality as he aged.

That's the best description I've ever heard of Vin.

I thought that said Scully's voice is "the perfect threat." I kind of hope the last thing I hear is Vin saying "You've eaten your last Farmer John hot dog" just before he stabs me in the neck.

Agreed, good line.

I kind of hope the last thing I hear is Vin saying "You've eaten your last Farmer John hot dog" just before he stabs me in the neck.
What would it mean if we agreed with you?
