It certainly sounds it…

Just got off the phone with Kris Benson’s agent, who says a deal between the free-agent right-hander and the Phillies may be struck within the next 24 to 36 hours.

Gregg Clifton told me he has been speaking with Phillies assistant GM Ruben Amaro Jr. and may be close to finalizing a contract for Benson, who missed all of last season after undergoing shoulder surgery.

“Both sides are saying, ‘You want this, we want this,’” Clifton said. “We’re in that mode now, and we’re having conversations back and forth. From years of doing this, I’d say we’ll know something in the next 24 to 36 hours, judging from where things are now.”

Why not? If things work out they might have a league average pitcher. There's not much in young pitching ready to contribute so the more arms the merrier.

I just wish the Phils' ownership cared enough about World Series titles. They have a nucleus right smack in their primes and they won't go beyond their parameters. 1 title in 125 years -- you'd think that would be incentive. Of course if this group never gets a championship, they can claim they are tied for the second most successful ownership in Phils' history -- with 0 titles. Sigh.

I think the Phillies would be smart to re-sign Lohse. He isn't going to be that expensive from the looks of things and he's pretty durable. I think Lohse may end up being a relative bargain all things considered.

I've never seen a free agent go on the roller coaster ride like Kyle Lohse has. He went from below average pitcher to wildly overrated with everyone predicting him to get a wildly outrageous contract, to people now saying he'll get a pretty cheap short term deal.

Geez, Benson seemed to have a bit of the gopheritis when he was "good." This may not be an ideal match.

It does seem that the market is correcting for a guy like Lohse ... if all anyone could do in November is bellyache about how much money he's going to get, then why would anyone give him that kind of money? The question I have is, how is the line for this correction above Lohse yet below (and, at 4 yr, $48MM, seemingly well below) Silva? There doesn't seem to be a ton of room in there for such a line to be placed.

She would be an A but for the use of performance-enhancing substances, so you have to discount when considering her Hall of Fame chances.

I was thinking of "A-Game" as a play on her first name and his recent pitching success. Like:

Announcer #1, spotting Anna Benson in the wives' section: "Well, I can see Kris has brought his A-Game tonight!"

Announcer #2: "Yes, but if he doesn't pitch any better than he has lately, they'll be in the parking lot by the sixth inning."

But not pitching deep into games really hasn't been Benson's problem. So the whole thing really doesn't work. Sorry.
