Newsday: Best: Suzyn Waldman on Roger Clemens, one year later

You mean it was a year ago already…that Waldman read for the lead in The Hazel Court Story?

Twelve months later, is Waldman shocked by what has unfolded in the life of Roger Clemens?

“Nothing shocks me anymore,” she said on a rare day off yesterday. “The only thing that has surprised me and disappointed me is the glee with which people are going after Roger.

“I think the more people accomplish, the bigger people are, the more excited people are to bring them down, and there’s a real feeding frenzy on this man.”

...Of course, Waldman is not as visible as Clemens, but last year, she absorbed criticism and ridicule both for her reaction to Clemens’ return and for shedding tears after Joe Torre’s final game.

“The only thing that surprises me about anything that happens is the glee with which people are dealing with this venom,” she said. “It surprised me last year when it happened to me.”

I have to admit, I thought Waldman's reaction to Clemens was a perfect moment for revelling in unadulterated snark. And no, I don't feel bad about it, even in hindsight. The announcers I admire would never have succumbed to that kind of rah rah hysteria. In hindsight, I wish I had revelled longer and more raucously in my snark. I don't blame her for crying about Torre, it was the Clemens BS that got to me.

As long as she's not going after Roger with glee.

The Yankees jumped the shark on 5/6/07. It was the day yankee tradition met the WWE.

There's only one thing that surprises me. And won't I be surprised when I find out what that is.

Yeah, the c--t word is for rare occasions. Very rare. Cooze seems much softer for some reason. I'd say the S.W.-Roger Clemens episode was more coozy than c---y.

Dear Suzyn.
1. Learn to spell your name correctly.
2. This is a byproduct of hero worship. If you don't want people to celebrate with glee over the failures of your hero's, internalize the worshiping.

But more twatty than coozy.

How snatchy was it?

“Nothing shocks me anymore,” she said on a rare day off yesterday. “The only thing that has surprised me and disappointed me is the glee with which people are going after Roger.

Read this again...So, she's not shocked Roger's trainer would show up at a congressional hearing with a beer can full of syringes and that a country music star would admit to starting a relationship with RC when she was 15 years old--15!, and that she, the 15 year old, was just one of many women he had stashed all over the country, though at least he was nice enough to, you know, meet the families of his mistresses and all so they knew he was on the up and up with being on the down low. None of that surprises her, which makes me wonder why she was so excited about having Roger back in the first place. Finally, the world's biggest jackass is a Yankee again! Hurray!

But more twatty than coozy.

Yeah. Maybe 65% twatty and 35% coozy. I'm liking this recipe!

The only thing that has surprised me is that Schadenfreude is unfamiliar to her.

In light of the current um, grooming habits of most women, I'm not sure that calling it bush is still accurate.

Goodness gracious, this hoo-hah has gone way over-the-top juvenile. Maybe I'm just an old coot, but I really find this barely tangenital to the story.

fanny (UK, Australian, NZ)

Hey, is that why the ultra-cool fashion accessory is called a "fanny pack?" I had always wondered about that, since its location isn't really on someone's ass.

Landing strip....

kebab (UK),

Even though they are from New Zealand, this puts a whole new spin on them sharing a kebab with the most beautiful girl the FotC had ever seen with a kebab.

I learned from an episode of The Office that what we call a "fanny pack" is, in the UK, called a "bum bag."

Granted, a lot of people wear them on the from now, but actually, they were originally intended to be worn on the ass, off the tradition of men keeping their wallets in their back pockets, etc.

So, she's OK with Roger poppin' the cherry on her 15 year old then?

I've seen nothing that indicates she was a virgin when their relationship began.
   31. flournoy Posted: May 06, 2008 at 07:51 PM (#2770948)
I can see why that didn't stick, as that leaves the wearer prone to pocket-pickers (fanny pickers, anyway...), and isn't conducive to sitting in a chair.

Suzyn Waldman's surprise and excitement lit up the radio waves that day, and spent the ensuing year echoing through the canyons of the Internet.

1) Urge strikes to make obvious crude "canyon" double-entendre.

2) Urge successfully resisted.
