Newsday: Best: Keith Hernandez rips ex-mate Gary Carter on air

Kid non-gracious Kid
You look so small you haven’t gone so quiet

Keith Hernandez ripped his former Mets teammate, Gary Carter, during yesterday’s game on Ch. 11, calling him “unconscious” after Carter openly campaigned for the managerial job currently occupied by Willie Randolph.

“I have great respect for Gary as a player,” said Hernandez, now a TV analyst. “He’s a Hall of Famer. When Johnny Bench left the game, he was the premier catcher in the National League.

“But that being said, and I’ve kept quiet for such a long time, but for the people out there listening, just go in the dictionary and look up ‘unconscious’ and you’ll find a picture of Gary Carter.

“I know that’s strong, but it just happens too many times and it’s just, you’re walking around unconscious.”

...Before Hernandez’s shot at Carter, play-by-play man Gary Cohen said: “Regardless of what happens, you can’t be any more indelicate or graceless than Gary Carter was in saying the things he said about being available to take over the job. I just cannot believe that Carter said what he said.”

Are we sure he was talking about The Kid and not the Mets offense?

Maybe Keith should look up "unconscious" in the dictionary.

I was thinking that at first, but then he said:

“I know that’s strong, but it just happens too many times and it’s just, you’re walking around unconscious.”

It's an odd thing to say, but I think he actually meant it as the word is defined.

I think Keith was looking for "oblivious", but when he couldn't recall it, went with it's second cousin, instead.

I thought Hernandez was going for "unconscionable."

1 : not aware, as in "unconscious of having made a mistake"
   7. sweetswing Posted: May 26, 2008 at 05:09 PM (#2794570)
I think he meant "sphincter", but that already had a picture of Bench next to it.

And in all this, Cohen and HErnandez were being consciously delicate and not just calling Carter the scumbag that he is.

Jeff Pearlman's book on the Mets tends to paint Carter as a big giant phony. Say what you want about Hernandez but he tends to have a pretty strong BS meter. I have no doubt Carter grated on him as a player and what Carter said really grated on a lot of people.

Your mom is unconscious.

Say what you want about Hernandez

Cool! I've been waiting for this thread.

Hernandez is a self-indulgent prick who needs to be personally introduced to Michael Vick's dogs.

And he doesn't like Philly cheesesteaks! (although it looks otherwise)

Carter has this Hillary Clinton-like tendency to say the wrong thing at just the wrong time and be completely oblivious to it.
Fixed.

Ahhh, but what is the PIE root for unconscious?

I don't think he means "unconscious" so much as he meant "un-conscious", as in not conscious of nuance. I think oblivious is probably too strong a word. I.e., I think Hernandez is using le mot juste.

I would love it if Carter's response to this was, "Ah, go snort some coke, Just-For-Men boy."

(That being said, I think Carter's being an ass. I'm just growing a little tired of Keith's righteousness in the booth, which I'm convinced has been negatively affected by Cohen.)
