Newsday: Best: Paul O’Neill stopped by Yankee Stadium security

Well, after O’Neill’s comment tonight about bunting leading to more runs than swinging away…they should have peeled out the Pear of Anguish.

In my item in Tuesday’s paper on Paul O’Neill limiting himself to 25 games per season on YES, I forgot to mention an amusing moment:

I was walking with O’Neill toward the Blue Jays’ locker room when a security guard stopped him and demanded to see a credential. O’Neill didn’t have one, but politely pointed out he is, well . . . Paul O’Neill!

The guard wasn’t buying it. I was about to chime in (and risk arrest) when another guard came over and said O’Neill was OK to go through.

I told O’Neill that maybe if he called more than 25 games a year, the staff would know who he is.

The security guard may need a guide dog.

The security guard should be happy he's not full of Gatorade.

O'NEILL: You promised a kid in the hospital that I would hit two home runs?

KRAMER: Yeah, well, no good?

O'NEILL: Yeah. That's no good. It's terrible. You don't hit home runs like that. It's hard to hit home runs. And where the heck did you get two from?

KRAMER: Two is better than one.

O'NEILL: That, that's ridiculous. I'm not a home run hitter.

KRAMER: Well, Babe Ruth did it.

O'NEILL: He did not.

KRAMER: Oh, do you say that Babe Ruth is a liar?

O'NEILL: I'm not calling him a liar but he was not stupid enough to promise two.

KRAMER: Well, maybe I did overextend myself.

O'NEILL: How the heck did you get in here anyway?

I think we want security guards who take their job seriously.

Disgraceful. That guard's entire salary is still being paid by O'Neill's past contributions to the Yankee swear jar.

You can always tell when Paul O'Neill is coming because he's accompanied at all times by a loud, annoying whine. Sort of like a dentist's drill, but with occasional profanities and complaints about the ump's strike zone mixed in.

The only positive contribution O'Neill makes as a broadcaster is when he disses umpires.

I could handle a color guy who did nothng but this. Put games on HBO and let them go to town.

And when he gives Michael Kay a hard time.
