Newsday: Matthews: Yankees can’t allow Santana to join Red Sox

BWAA! (Boxing Writers Association of America) BWAA! BWAA!

That, of course, would be disaster, and the end of baseball as we have come to know it around here. If Santana goes to Boston, the Yankees go to second place in the American League East for the rest of George Steinbrenner’s life, and maybe Hank Steinbrenner’s, too. It’s as simple as that.

...“With Hank in charge, the feeling is we’ve got to win now,” the source said. “We’ve got to show our fans we’re not waiting around, that we’re committed to winning right away.”

...“We got some good young pitchers in ‘A’ ball right now that might make us forget all about Hughes and Kennedy,” the source said. “Melky? See ya later. You can always find a centerfielder. There ain’t too many Santanas out there.”

Santana going to the Angels or Dodgers isn't worth giving up Hughes over. Hughes has the potential to be a great, great pitcher for many years.

But it is worth giving up that potential to keep Santana out of Boston. It's not just because it's Boston, their top rival, but because it's the toughest team in their own division. The difference between Santana in Boston and Santana in New York, for the Yankees, is huge, and worth giving up tremendous potential for.

If the Angels or Dodgers top the Boston offer, then so be it. But don't let Boston get him.

According to the New York Daily News, there's "speculation in MLB circles" that the Mets are considering parting with Jose Reyes in a potential trade for Johan Santana.

Minnesota traded away its starting shortstop Wednesday, sending Jason Bartlett to Tampa Bay. However, previous reports have suggested that the Mets aren't willing to trade Reyes, David Wright or Carlos Beltran. If a deal for Santana can't be worked out, the newspaper speculates that the Mets will pursue Erik Bedard, Dan Haren or Dontrelle Willis. Nov. 29 - 10:23 am et

I think it's Hank Steinbrenner. Not that the two are mutually exclusive.

As long as the Wild Card stays (and I don't see it going away any time soon), I don't agree. If second-place was a guaranteed bounce from the playoffs, I think you're right. But regardless of what the Red Sox do, ninety-something games will get you where you need to go.

I still think Santana's value to the Yankees is the same whether the alternative is Santana to the Angels or Santana to the Red Sox. It's not like keeping Santana from Boston suddenly makes it worth it to give up Hughes + Cano.

Hey, as a fan of a team (Cleveland) that will be competing with the Yankees for the pennant the next few years, I'm totally fine with New York using a 30something AAAA second baseman at first base as much as possible. Maybe they can even swing a deal with the Tribe for Keith Ginter.
