Newsday: Pettitte signs contract, officially rejoins Yanks

Pettitte feels the Yankees don’t need another stud with Wang hanging around.

Pettitte expressed confidence in the team. While he said he will miss manager Joe Torre, he thinks highly of new manager Joe Girardi, a former teammate. He also believes the Yankees can make a run at a World Series even if they are unable to add Johan Santana or Dan Haren.

“There’s been a lot of speculation that we need a true power arm, an ace or whatever,” Pettitte said, “but I disagree with that. I think (Chien-Ming) Wang is an absolute stud. I think he is an ace. I understand that he struggled in the postseason before, and that’s going to happen. ... If you add one of those guys (Santana or Haren), that would be great, they both have unbelievable arms and they’re unbelievable pitchers. To say that we need one of those guys to be able to win, I just can’t believe that.”

Did anyone really believe he wouldn't be back? Guy's a bigger DQ than A-Rod and Clemens combined.

I am pretty sure he did this as a favor to Cashman and the Yanks, to keep him off the 40 man for awhile.

Pettitte's return is one of the most important things that has happened in Yankeeland this off season. Without Pettitte I'll bet Santana would be a Yankee by now and they still would've needed to throw huge money at, let's say, Silva, in order to have acceptable depth to their rotation. Pettitte saved NY a boatload of money, nevermind Hughes & Melky.

Just a day before the Mitchell report comes out too. But I'm sure that's purely coincidental, right?

I'm shocked it took four posts to get to this.
