Neyer: Moves at Trade Deadline Can Be Great Deal of Trouble

The most important thing to know about baseball trades made in July is that most of them do not amount to much. Few of the stars traded to contenders will be the difference between winning and losing, and few of the young prospects traded for stars will become stars. Still, we have had a flurry of activity leading to Sunday’s deadline for nonwaiver trades (don’t ask), with stars like Carlos Beltran, and numerous lesser lights changing teams and kindling hope among their new teams’ fans.

And although most of these deadline deals are ultimately good for all parties — contrary to popular opinion, baseball executives are generally intelligent — there have been a few notably disastrous deadline trades over the years. ...

Usually, it is not the guys you trade that hurt you. According to the old saw, you have to give quality to get quality. What hurts you are the guys you get who are not nearly as good as you thought.

Well, it's good to know that Neyer can still do long pieces.

How many veteran, right-handed-hitting infielders is the team going to go through this year?

Tejada, Sanchez, DeRosa, Hall, Keppinger, Cabrera.

Why aren't the Dodgers trading anyone?
A) They suck
B) They have no money
C) Their team is a grab-bag of random parts
D) They have several players that contenders should be interested in

The Dodgers did trade Furcal to the Cardinals.

a bad-deadline-deal article with nary a mention of Bagwell?

All this trading is great for baseball. It gets the NFL off the headlines for a few days (except for ESPN, which is absolutely married to football) and creates interest for both contenders getting veteran pieces and younger teams acquiring prospects to help with rebuilding. Frank "Trader" Lane and Syd Thrift would be proud.

I'm sure they'll cover the Rich Harden deal from several angles.

Why on earth are the Twins contemplating dealing Denard Span and for a reliever of all things?

The last Washington reliever they overpaid for in trade worked out so well that they decided to double down.

Orlando Cabrera to the Giants

He already had a shot, but this enhances OC's chances of tying Kenny Lofton's mark for playing in the postseason for six different teams (and it likely will be his fifth straight year in the playoffs with five different teams. Suck it Hinske).

I'm pretty sure they think Ben Revere is pretty much the same thing as Denard Span. Which he's not.

"When the Oakland Athletics traded Mark McGwire to the Cardinals for three young players in 1988, they did not get much in return. "

damn those players named 10 years later...
