Neyer: Royals Hire Dave Eiland As New Pitching Coach

Non-dead Eiland.

After the season the Royals fired Bob McClure, their pitching coach of six seasons. Today they’ve hired Dave Eiland, who spent this season working in the Rays’ front office after three seasons as the Yankees’ pitching coach…

the Yankees fired [Eiland] after three seasons because their pitching staff had under-performed, which looks only more true after a 2011 in which the staff’s ERA jumped from seventh in the American League to fourth.

Meh, Dave Duncan was the pitching coach for some awful Mariners clubs. Roger Craig was the pitching coach for some terrible Padres teams. Maybe Eiland is a good pitching coach, maybe he isn't, but I'm not convinced that he had much to do with the decline of Joba, AJ or Vazquez.

I thought the Yankees replaced Eiland because he missed a couple months of the 2010 season while he was in rehab, not because they thought he was a bad pitching coach.

I guess one man really is an Eiland unto himself.

I'm not sure the specific reason for Eiland's absence was revealed - just personal reasons may have been cited while he was away. But I think the absence was a factor in his non-renewal since I seem to have a fuzzy recollection of Cashman, in another fit of disclosure, indicating it was for non-performance issues that Eiland was aware of.

Letting Eiland go because he went through rehab could have been a bit of a problem under the ADA.

Actually, I think it's because they kept him on under the condition that he not have a relapse, and he did. I don't recall it that much.

I think Eiland is a perfectly fine pitching coach. Nothing special.

Hey Michael Kay...are teams still lining up to grab the genius that is Ron Guidry?
