I called the record store and asked who slipped in a Mats cover band's CD into my album case.

As much as I love that album, I think you have to pull the Weezer corollary and dock them a few points for their recent output. And Keeley comes across as a real dbag, too.

Still, Pinkerton is one of my favorites, despite what they've put out since it.

Sebadoh III, Sebadoh

I just started listening to Sebadoh a few months ago. I really like Bakesale a lot.

Been asleep & missed a few posts...

- Trail of Dead have been terrible lately. They really did peak with Source Tags & Codes. Their previous album 'Madonna' is fantastic as well.

- Slint are playing 'Spiderland'in it's full form as well soon.

- I can't belive I don't own Sebadoh III considering I own Bakesale and love it.

Of the albums released in '91, I listen to 4 regularly: Steady Diet and Badmotorfinger have been mentioned; Kyuss's Wretch and Motorhead's 1916(terribly underrated) are the others. I enjoyed Pioughd and Apocalypse '91 at the time, but they haven't really passed the test of time.

I've been a bit sick of all the reunion shows lately (although the Compound Red and Alligator Gun show was fantastic), but I'd certainly like to see the entirety of spiderland live. Where? When? And speaking of slint, if you don't know the song "Beloved Woman" by Papa M, you should download it now.

Different enough, but similar enough too, especially in the vocal styles and the sort of feel of the album for me.

I'm sure this is terribly heterdoxical, but Murray Street's a pretty kickin' record. "Disconnection Notice": standout. Of the small clutch of stuff I know by them, "DN" is probably my penultimate favorite, after "Teenage Riot."

You silly, silly people -- Curse of the Mekons was the best LP of '91. One of the best of the entire decade, for that matter.

Wir(e)'s The First Letter is also obscenely underrated, even by Wire devotees.

Wolfmother's success baffles me, but hey they are Aussies and seem like nice guys.

Their singer sounds like Robert Plant, their songs sound like a lot of palatable heavy metal... as instrumentalists they are not wholly without talent. Basically, they are the best that is allowed to reach the major media outlets... granted, there is much better that doesn't make it through, but you have to compare them to what does and they do pretty well in that comparison.

I find the last 25 years or so of popular rock material to generally be excreble.

Key word there: "popular".

On a more serious note, has anyone mentioned Tromp le Monde by Pixies or Whenever We Wanted by John Cougar Mellancamp.

Strangely, the best song of the 1990s - Epic by Faith No More - came out in the '80s. (Released '89, but the song broke in '90).

For those who want something even more obscure, Marah's "Let's Cut the Crap and Hook Up Later on Tonight" is a true gem (1997, issued on Blue Mountain's label). This was the hard-to-find one before "Kids in Philly" and before they tried---and failed---to be the next big thing. It's a genre-hopping mix of early Springsteen, Stones, Highwaymen, U. Tupelo, all filtered through a chip-on-the-shoulder, cheesesteaks-and-Mummers Philly attitude. Recorded for less than 4 grand (1997 dollars) in a South Philly walkup on an eight track with only seven working tracks. An amazing record. Tracks not to be missed, "Formula, Cola, Dollar Draft" and "Limb." It's a Wow! record.

Oh, and Harry Kalas makes a guest appearance.

Come to think of it, without taking the tme to look up their discographies, odds are that The Fall & KMFDM each released at least one album in '91, too ...
