NJ.com: Don’t drink the water!

Two signs on the doors leading from the visitors’ clubhouse at U.S. Cellular Field to the first-base dugout read, “NO BOTTLED WATER ON THE BENCH.”

What’s this? Athletes can’t drink water? Even in the humid Chicago summers?

Here’s the explanation I got:

Gatorade is Major League Baseball’s “official sports drink.” So instructions were sent that no player could be seen drinking anything but Gatorade in the dugout. Not even Aquafina, which is the “official water” of MLB. Not even bottles of water with the labels removed.

Water?  Like outta the toilet?

Has anyone noticed the Red Sox drinking a red drink from Poland Spring water bottles?

Yes. All the time, over the last few years. I think it's red Gatorade from the powder mix, but I could be wrong.

But if they put gin in a Gatorade bottle, that would be a-O.K.

"Gatorade, the official beverage of Major League Baseball....WHETHER THEY LIKE IT OR NOT!"

Margaritas would be a better color match.

What a crock. On the flip side though, bottled water itself is a crock. At least you can't get Gatorade for free out of your tap.

Hey Bobby, water sucks!

I, for one, am thankful that Bud Selig and Major League Baseball have the courage, mettle and valor to finally stand up to major leaguers and their water drinking ways. We need a level playing field, and finally that day has become realized.

Yeah, it's what plants crave!

If the union won't stand up for/against steroids, they should still mix things up here to either preserve players' options for more training aids (keep the water) or fight against the forced use of unnatural substances (Gatorade). At the very least it would be fun to make this into a 15 round battle of the Offical Sponsorship titans between Pepsico (Gaterade) and Coca Cola (Aquafina).

Edit: I can;t write.

Why do they do that instead of just drinking Gatorade/Powerade from the bottle? Is it because of some deal with Poland Springs? The Red Sox drink only from Poland Spring bottles regardless of what they are drinking.

I saw the headline and assumed it had something to do with the Red Sox flu outbreak.

It'd be cool if this lead to MLB teams issuing reusable bottles to each player. Not likely, though.

Not after the recent bisphenol A scare.

Maybe all those estrogens in the water bottles explain why the Mets can't hit for power this year.

Also, banning any drink except Gatorade is insanely stupid. Wouldn't it be good enough advertising to just have a couple big GATORADE coolers there? Or are they afraid more players will injure themselves hitting the coolers with bats and throwing them onto the field?
   18. Guapo Posted: April 24, 2008 at 04:17 PM (#2757272)
Also, going forward games will only be postponed if the field is flooded by Gatorade. Rain is not permitted to be acknowleged by the players or the umpire.

PepsiCo owns both Gatorade and Aquafina. Coke's water brand is Dasani.
