NL East race: September 24, 2008

Phillies MLB.com writer: BUSTED!!!!!!

MLB.com: Phils don’t gain ground, lose to Braves

Brett Myers allowed the Braves to get on the board early and the Phillies could not come back, losing to Atlanta, 10-4, at Citizens Bank Park on Wednesday night. The Mets defeated the Cubs, reducing the Phillies’ lead in the division to just a half-game.

MLB.com: Mets tied for NL Wild Card lead

Forced into a battle of the bullpens with the Cubs on Wednesday, the Mets held their own until the 10th inning. But their ensuing 9-6 loss kept them 1 1/2 games back of the Phillies, who also lost, and knocked them into a tie with the Brewers atop the National League Wild Card standings. Now the Mets find themselves in a most precarious position.

PHI 89-70 [14-8 in SEPT]
NYM 87-71 [11-10 in SEPT] (1.5 GB)

That was the game that ended the Mets' season.

The Mets came this close to getting a real shot to return last year's favor to the Phils.

Unfortunately this is what happens to the Mets now. They find exquisite, divine ways to lose.

That was the game that ended the Mets' season.

I'm happy and yet, I feel this deep, sickening nausea.

I would love for the Mets to miss out thereby having no NY team in the playoffs but I think it is better for the Cubs if the Mets get in and the Brewers miss out. I would rather have LA and the Phillies play each other while the Cubs play NY then have the Cubs play LA and PHI play MIL.

Sacrifice your own preferences of who the Cubs play in the Division Series for the greater cause. Root for the Brewers.

If the Cubs had won the World Series last year I could see myself rooting for the Brewers but since they haven't won it in an eternity I have to think about what helps out the Cubs the most.

Jeez, how did the Mets not score? It seems like they had the winning on third base all night.

Jeez, how did the Mets not score?

Did you see the Wright AB with none out? It is one of the more horrific AB's any player has had this year.

I think that one killed Russlan.

I'll be there until they are eliminated but I haven't thought they'd make it since they went 4-6 against the Nationals and Braves before the Cubs series. They needed to do better than that and didn't.

It's been a roller coaster season that would exhaust the patience of any fan.

This one hurt. They had their chances to win, despite Ollie only giving them 4.1 innings, and just couldn't come through.

It's amazing when a loss like this has little effect on you.

I guess it says something about the 2008 Mets.

Just in the last month, the Mets have had about 6 tough losses.

Tonight.
9/21, 4-3 lead after 7, Mets lose 7-6 against the Braves.
9/14, 4-2 lead after 8, Mets lose 7-4 against the Braves.
9/13, 2-0 lead after 8, Mets lose 3-2 against the Braves.
8/30, Mets lose a game against the Marlins in which they had a 3-0 lead as Heilman walks 4 in the ninth.
8/26, Mets lose a game against the Phillies in which they held a 7-run lead.

The whole season season has been like that.

We didn't even use our special collapsing weapon: Aaron Heilman. I guess we needed to save something for Thursday.
