NL East race: September 9, 2008

MLB.com: Dos Carlos lead Mets over Nats

They withstood the persistence of the Nationals—those pesky Nats—and the inadequate pitching of Oliver Perez and produced an angst-filled victory that was a tribute to their own perseverance and offense.

The 10-8 victory and the second-place Phillies’ loss by the same score to the Marlins increased the Mets’ lead in the National League East to 2 1/2 games…

MLB.com: Phils’ big rally not enough to catch Fish

Starter Kyle Kendrick was pounded for seven runs in 1 1/3 innings as the Phillies fell to the Marlins, 10-8, at Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday night.

NYM 81-63 [5-2 in SEPT]
PHI 79-66 [4-4 in SEPT] (2.5 GB)

The Mets are now 3 games up in the loss column which is where they were at before the Phils series.

Delgado has a 1.464 OPS in September and has hit 4 homers in the last two games, all against lefties.

An excellent evening. As well as Delgado is hitting, let's not forget about Beltran. His hitting has been very good since the calendar turned to August.

Willie's Mets do a total El Foldo in that game. It's a completely different feeling this time.

The Brewers are tied 4-4 going to the 10th. If they lose, the Mets will be tied with them in the loss column -- giving them a potential cushion in that the WC is very much in play if the division race should not go well. Not that I want it to come to that, but it certainly is a relevant consideration.

EDIT:

And it was nice to get two-hit games from the two core players who had been slumping, Reyes and Wright. Can you say, "all cylinders"? How critical would it be to have the line-up hitting all together?

My one quibble: I honestly think it's time to give a lot less PT to Tatis. Church and the Kiddie Platoon should get the vast majority of the corner OF time. Just my two cents worth.

That's especially important with the Brewers and Phillies playing a 4-game set before the season ends.

And if the Phillies should happen to take the Brew Crew out in that series and launch themselves (or the Mets -- whoever ends up 2nd in the East) into WC contention, it could scramble the possible post-season match-ups. The East winner might get the Dodgers or Diamondbacks, while the WC (Mets or Phillies) could meet the Cubs. Everyone has kind of been assuming the Cubs would meet the West champs, but it could all get turned around, depending in large part on that Phil-Mil series.

Certainly, it'd be better for the Mets if the Phils take the WC than if Milwaukee does. A first round matchup against LA is a lot less worrisome than one with the Brewers. That's assuming it's the Dodgers and not Arizona coming out of the West, of course.

Also, Delgado has just been ridiculous. Every time he looks like he's starting to slow down, he goes out and launches a handful of home runs. I'd be interested to see what odds PECOTA or ZIPS gave Delgado to have his current season line, before his 9 RBI game against the Yankees.

BTW, how about a little love for Beltran? He has quietly posted a .319/.385/.585 batting line since August 1st with 30 runs and 28 RBI in 36 games.

I'm sorry, Russlan. Your request to join the Beltran Bandwagon has been taken under advisement, and I regret to inform you that it is now full. We have added your name to the waiting list, and you will be advised if room opens up.

Trade him for Cano, huh? It'll be a cold day in hell when I forgive THAT one, pal.

Beltran's gonna have to put up another forty-homer season for him to get any (positive) attention playing on this team. Really unfortunate since he's been arguably been the most valuable position player this year.
   11. Russlan will never be fond of Jason Bay Posted: September 10, 2008 at 04:33 AM (#2935325)
That was never meant as disrespect to Beltran. I love watching Beltran play baseball. He's the most graceful baseball player I have ever watched. He does everything well.

Russlan suggested trading Beltran for Cano? It's still better than not trading Heilman/Show for Fuentes.

He supported a deal of Beltran/Castillo for Cano/Damon. To say I was stunned would be a vast understatement.

The 1st HR Delgado HR was an All-Time Shea HR. Not many make it there. I bounced back off the scoreboard and hit the Apple. It had to be 450+

I don't love Willie or anything, but thats not fair. At least, the 2007 Willie Mets made a ton of comebacks, even during the collapse.

Maybe not the Willie 08 Mets.
