MLB.com: Pagan comes through in ninth to lift Giants

Angel Pagan’s single broke a ninth-inning tie Sunday and lifted the Giants to a 7-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs, completing San Francisco’s highly successful 5-1, two-city trip.

MLB.com: Reversal of fortune as [Adrian] Gonzalez a walk-off winner

On Sunday, [Adrian Gonzalez] proved just why the organization coveted him so much when he hit a walk-off, two-run double in the ninth inning to give the Dodgers a much-needed 5-4 win Sunday against the D-backs.

So with 27 games remaining for the Dodgers and 28 for the Giants, if the Giants go 14-14, the Dodgers would have to go 19-9.

19-9 is a very do-able number. That makes me nervous. On the flip side, if the Giants go 16-12, the Dodgers would have to go 21-7 to catch. Every year a new team to fend off at the end. Ugh.

LA @ SF on the 7th, 8th and 9th. Before then, the Giants have 3 at home vs. Arizona, while the Dodgers are down in San Diego, also for 3.

This is the first time since the early 2000s that the Giants have entered September having to fend off another team. In 2010, they had to catch the Padres before they could worry about fending them off. In 2011, September began with the Giants five back of the Diamondbacks, and it never got any closer than that.

SF is in a very solid position; the Dodgers are only 1/2 behind STL for the second WC, though.

Adrian Gonzalez back in SD this week, in a Dodger uni. Casey Kelly pitched for the Padres today.
